Toyota RAV4 xT3 2.2 d 4d. 2006. 120k - Transmission noise - strickjumpers

Hello,

I bought this car with slight livable noise, it has developed, there is a noise about 6 x wheel rotation frequency, normal running and even when coasting downhill with engine off, depressiong clutch or light braking, noise is there, kind of scraping, gear/bearing type noise, evident from front of transmission tunel inside the car, changed the nearside wheel bearing, no difference, driveshafts seem to be ok, changed the oil in the gearboxes, all good and clean with no metal particles or chunks. I wonder if its time to replace the transfer box or main gearbox, propshaft universals look ok as does central support bearing.

The noise is a function of road speed and does not vary with revs or gears.

just not sure the bits that rotate on the gearbox when in neutral or clutch dipped, was going to remove propshaft and try to see if its the back wheels driving the transfer box,

jacked up with both nearside wheels off the ground, started in gear runs off load silent and dead sweet.

any idvice or recomendations where to go next greatly appreciated, maybe this is a known fault?

thanks, Mike.

If you havn't done it. the next obvious thing to try would seem to be

jacked up with both offside wheels off the ground, start in gear and see how it runs then,

If you get the noise its on that side. If you don't it suggests its a gravitational load sensitive component, a bearing being the obvious candidate.
