I read in todays paper, I won't say which one as it tends to set people off in another direction, that it can cost £100 more on the premium for driving an automatic car. Apparently the reason is due to the added complication of auto boxes and cost to repair? Since when has an insurance company had to concern itself with repairs to auto gearboxes other than the odd box damaged in crashes?

Cost of repairs has always been included in insurance - if a car is more costly to mend then the premium will increase.

Blimey, our insurances are so cheap now if we had manual cars the insurers would almost be paying us :-)

Seriously though, sounds like a lot of baloney to me, maybe the statistics show certain cars with auto boxes are involved in more at fault accidents than manual versions of the identical model...would be interesting to know which makes and models these increased premiums apply to.

Automatic cars cost more?

It'll be all that left foot braking causing multiple accidents. ;-)

Suspect it’s click bait rubbish.
My X3 has an auto gearbox only as do many premium brand cars. My premium isn’t excessive for a car with a £50k list price as new. It’s a nonsense story. They’ll be saying next cars with twin exhausts are ‘sporty’ so attract a higher premium.

The insurers pay out for billions of bent bumpers, wings etc etc a few years back the average claim was under £2,000

The really big payouts are to victims of road accident deaths but the biggest payments are for people that have sustained life changing injuries requiring 24 x 365 care amounting to possibly £1,000 per day.

A son in Scotland pays £750 per year for an RS4 & a top model Golf -

A sin in the USA a son pay $2,500 for 6 month cover X5 & a Panamera - this reflects the very high cost of "people damage" - new cars in the US (& normal servicing ) are much cheaper than here in the UK.

Albeit some may react badly it would be interesting to know which paper reported this. It's not exactly 'political' content is it?

I suspect the reason is that, across the whole UK car fleet, automatics are more likely to be involved in accidents. These will involve the well publicised 'wrong pedal' stuff and various other issues around creep, runaway and inadvertent mix ups of forward and reverse gears. Add into the blend too the older people who buy an automatic for convenience or because of health issues.

The vast majority of those accidents will be panel creasing or 'fender bender' encounters but a few will have far more dire consequences.

The secret I suspect is to shop around for the insurer who has that issue under control, for example by being selective about what they cover.
