Tata announced on Friday that it will spin off Jaguar Land Rover from its Indian truck business so that the UK car side can seek 'strategic alliances' with other companies.

TATA have been talking of selling off JLR for a while. I believe they’ve always had a short term view to the firm from day one. It’s been a rush to launch new models and new tech but little interest in quality or reliability.

I believe Peugeot were sniffing around.

But they'll take it further - understandably - only if they can sniff profit. It seems to me that JLR have far too many models and not enough volume (as the German brands have) to justify them.

The new Defender has been well reviewed so far but at a minimum price of over £40,000 it'll surely take most of its sales from other Land Rover models.

It's an sector that PSA isn't currenly in, but if losses at JLR continue they might pick it up cheaply and apply a corporate pruning-hook. If they see money to be made in the luxury sector, better JLR than DS, which I can't see going anywhere.

I expect the Defender to take sales from the ugly, ungainly Discovery in turn killing it off. For those with the means the Defender will be the 'must' have vehicle of the moment and they won't be bothered by questionable reliability.

I think DS brand a pointless waste. Criminal to use the 'DS' on cars undeserving of such an iconic name.

Expect most people don't even know the history of the name - and at the end of the name it is just a name.

Think it would be a good fit for PSA as they don't have any vehicles in the 4x4 and luxury market

I enjoyed John Cadogan's take on buying a Land Rover (and Skoda):
