Nissan Note. Manual. 1.2 petrol non turbo. 15k miles. FSH

Chattering / chipmunk sound when accelerating without changing down, so engine under a bit of a load - e.g. when going up an incline.

SWMBO fills up at nearest petrol station which is a Tesco so not the best fuel. Occasionally she fills with Momentum 99.

Any ideas please.

Nissan cars sold in the UK will be built to use standard 95 RON BS petrol and that is the only petrol you can buy in the UK other than the expensive brews that claim to cure every possible issue. Because of that I can 100% assure you that petrol is not the cause of your problems.

We have been using supermarket petrol for every fill up when we are at home since Asda opened a filling station in the mid 80's. We have to use "branded" fuels when we are away on holiday since there are no supermarkets within 30 miles or so. using the "branded" fuel makes no difference to any car we have owned, petrol or diesel.

I presume you are aware that supermarket fuel comes form the same tanks at the same depots as the "branded stuff. The only difference is the secret additives used but without those it would still meet the required BS.

You need to look elsewhere for a cure.

I'd suggest you try a tankful of the higher octane premium petrol sold. If it cures the problem then you'll know it's 'pinking' at a low diagnostic cost.

If it is 'pinking', then the problem will need deeper analysis.

Four year old car, 15k miles.. Under 4 k miles a year.

So I guess mainly short runs, never warms up in winter , never revs above 3,000rpm.

Has it been regualrly serviced?

If yes, I would drive 20 miles with revs over 4,000 to heat up the catalyst and burn out the carbon which has condensed in the exhaust system.. Nearer 5,000 rpm is better.. It gets a bit noisy..

(do this annually for our Yaris Diesel to pass the smoke emission test in mOT)

If no, get it serviced and then do above.

It gets serviced every 12 months / 4K miles.

It’s alway been short journeys until the last couple of months when several 200 mile journeys have been added.

SWMBO is taking it for its 4th service today with instructions to tell them about the pinking.

I'm a taxi driver and we have tested supermarket vs branded fuel extensively. What we have found with supermarket VS branded are the following.

Supermarket fuel: burns faster, engine isn't as refined, EGR valves get chocked up faster (insignia's particularly) DPFs regen more. Basically substandard for modern vehicles with the strict emissions they are now required to meet.

I know there are people here who will argue to they are blue in the face this is nonsense but when you cover the mileage we do, we notice things the average driver won't, however small. So my suggestion - the OP sticks some BP ultimate in car, to at least half a tank, nearest motorway and thrash it for 30 mins keeping the revs at a min of 3k

I thought taxi drivers preferred diesels. Am I wrong ?

It was the auxiliary belt slipping under load. Replaced. No more chattering.

I am suitably embarrassed. :-)

Thanks for getting back. That's a new one and hope it's cured it. I realise it's embarrassing to admit it, but it all adds to the mutual knowledge. I'm certain I've mis-diagnosed a few problems in my past.

Very common on these cars and the Micra with the same engine.

Arrgh!

The squeal has returned with a vengeance.

It's 500 miles since the main dealer replaced the auxiliary belts for a small fortune.

What's the chance that its the same issue and will they want to charge again?

Unless it's something simple / cheap to repair, maybe time to flog it while you can still get a reasonable price for it?

Just read your original post

Nissan never made a Note petrol turbo. The uprated model was actually supercharged.

Does the noise happen only under load and possibly reduce if you change down eg going up a hill in 5th when you should really be in 4th or 3rd? If so it might be old-fashioned pre ignition or "pinking", it can still occur if the engine knock sensor is faulty. I would have that checked if possible.

I thought pinking originally but the dealer replaced the belts and it went away only to come back 500 miles later.

Oddly, it disappears when you change up to 5th!

This noise is so loud people turn around to see what's making it!

Zippy I idly googled this and the first hit was the noteownersclubuk. I only scanned the thread but there was a suggestion that if the belt is replaced without cleaning the pulleys thoroughly then screeching can recur.

Thanks, it didn't occur!

Doh!

What does the belt drive? A pulley bearing that is beginning to seize can become stiff, unduly loading the belt that drives it, causing it to squeal. Years ago I remember that happeneing to our old Passat 2.0GL estate. It was the cambelt tensioner pulley which I was able to replace before it friction-fried the cambelt, which was still perfectly serviceable at 242,000 miles when we disposed of the car. It's no good just replacing the belt if, say, the water pump is about to seize. In the old days, a squealing belt had probably just become loose and needed tightening up a bit. These days, it is more likely to be a symptom of an underlying problem. Possibly your garage is awaiting your future expensive custom with glee......
