Just taken the 306 to my regular indie for some overdue but inessential jobs. It's about 3 miles away down a largely rural B-road - a joy to drive today, just like about 1980 or earlier, hardly any traffic. They seemed to be busier than usual, maybe people are anticipating a full shutdown. They are taking each day as it comes, and they can have the car as long as needed.
Local Morrisons getting busy about 9:30, looking about normal. I'm a bit surprised there aren't face masks and hand-gel on offer at the entrances, but it's a relatively small supermarket in the middle of town. Back into hibernation now ...

Any bikers on here who went to the usual meet spots such as Matlock and Southport want to explain why they weren't social distancing when they got there?

I find bikers ganerally fine as individuals.. But in groups they sometimes appear to suffer from a certain lack of logical thinking..(likeScottish footbal supporters :-(

The bikers round these parts were riding like total idiots all day yesterday as were the owners of modified cars with loud popping exhausts. Guess with a possible imminent death by Corona virus pending they consider death by bike/car crash a suitable alternative.

Perhaps they reckon they are virus-proof inside leathers and helmets ?

Had some similar oiks round my way in North Herts over the weekend, who also found it amusing to cough at people through their car windows when they were passing them, then speeding and doing burnouts.
The same sort who thought it a smashing idea to go in huge numbers and sun themselves on Brighton beach last weekend.
Sometimes I give up at my generation and the youngest. They just don't give a ****.

Yes, it seems at the moment that the 'authorities' are over-reacting to what appears to be a relatively mild bug, with exaggerated effects on global behaviour.
4 weeks on from your original post any thoughts on this comment.

I think it's still a bit too soon to decide whether it has been an over-reaction. At bottom it is less about protecting individuals than preventing NHS overload. The bug is a new one, and is similar to winter flu, which has always knocked over a number of frail people in a bad year. The fundamental problem is that after a decade of 'good times' the NHS has been trimmed back until there is too little spare capacity to handle a surge like C-virus. This time, because of a draconian response, the consequences for the economy will last a lot longer than the bug itself - and there will be no spare cash to rebuild the NHS afterwards.

The new bug is not like winter flu - it's a different type of virus.
We won't need to rebuild the NHS as it is not going anywhere - if anything it will be stronger afterward.

The last bad year for flu in the UK was 2013 when over 13,000 people died. Did that create a situation like we have today, it certainly did not in fact I cannot remember hit making front page news, we simply got on with life.
That is because Covid-19 and seasonal flu are very different. Covid-19 is much more infectious (if that's the correct wording) for starters and it does not appear to be seasonal (they thought it would be initially with governments predicting it would go away come spring).
This could turn out far worse than any one currently predicts especially if new outbreaks appear after lockdowns have been ended.
America is surely the key at present but with the idiot Trump in charge they have little chance of avoiding a total catastrophe. India with their huge population and limited healthcare will be even worse if it takes hold but at least they appear to be trying to prevent people contact.

To be fair to Trump, the US Democrats are not exactly covering themselves in glory either, holding up the financial assistance package in order (and 1000 pages of extras) to add in 'diversity quotas', climate changes stuff, other woke things nothing to do with the crisis, etc whilst one of their own wants to give money to illegal immigrants.
All the while, Joe Biden mutters incoherently and wanders about, Bernie Sanders looks like another heart attack-in-waiting and the NJ Govenor Cuomo only changed his tune on isolating people and not going to work on public transport (a-la Citizen Khan in London) after stating they were 'safe' because his polling numbers didn't look good. And where's the outbreak hitting worst by far - NY city.
The US is still a nation of mainly self-governed states, unlike the UK, and there's only so much federal help the president can bring to bear. Many of the govenors and other senior local politicians are at least equally to blame, as are the national-level Democratic leadership who look like a spoilt child for not getting their way and acting out of spite.
The important number to watch is the death rate - currently double ours, but with 8x as many cases and 6x the population.

Sorry but that is nonsense. In a national emergency like this the President should be prepared to take unpopular decisions for the good of the country but Trump in election year is thinking about votes and not casualties. Perhaps he expects more democrats to die in cites rather than Republicans out in the sticks and get re elected by default.

He's following their constitution. States have rights. He can't do what he likes, as much as you think he might.
Perhaps you should check out left-leaning YT commentator and journalist Tim Pool's commentary on this - whilst he is critical of Trump, he is absolutely scathing of NJ Mayor DeBlasio, the state Govenor, the Democrats in Congress as well as China, abbedtted by the MSM:

Note also that the WHO are bending the knee to China as well, as evidenced in Tim's videos with footage of them LYING and not fielding questions about Taiwan through fear of upsetting Winnie the pooh's regime.

<< Covid-19 is much more infectious .... This could turn out far worse than any one currently predicts >>
Covid-19 will be more infectious because it hasn't yet met anyone with antibody resistance to it. When some herd immunity has built up things will change. The modellers at ICL are now talking about a death count of 5700, which is a long way short of the earlier guesses.

for a more measured reaction Peter Hitchens is worth a read
hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk/
For what its worth i'm fully in agreement with President Trump, in that we are in danger of the cure being worse than the disease, a crashed economy leading to millions jobless penniless and debt ridden when the country itself owes some £2trillion is on the cards, we're going to see some genuine austerity in due course to put the country back on course.
I hope those with gold plated pensions realise that gilt might be wearing thin when the numbers are run..

I'm sure you said you never read the mainstream media...

I have asked you a few times where you do get your news as you have repeatedly said you don't read mainstream news from but you never reply.

It doesn't matter where he gets his news from. He makes a valid point, whether we agree with it or not.

In stark contrast to his very much brighter and sadly missed brother Christopher, I don't think Peter Hitchens has ever had an original thought in his life. He could have gone on to say that, much like when small pox, TB and polio were rife, we shall have to learn to live with C-19 until we develop an effective vaccine. Thankfully its mortality rate and survivor morbidity is considerably lower than those three - so far.

UPDATE - my 207 had been booked for an MoT and oil change today, but my indie decided to close last Friday, expecting limited business after the 6-month MoT extension. So I booked at the local ATS instead, which said they would do the oil change but not the MoT (why not wasn't revealed). I rolled up this morning and they refused to use the grade of oil I asked for (and which the car has used for 10 years with no problems) so I called my nearest MoT garage who did the job straight away. All rather strange, but job done in the end. I guess things may get more difficult before getting better.
