I'm surprised that half the threads haven't been deleted by now if grounds for removal are 'annoyance'. Any political commentary would, I'm sure, annoy many of us from every political colour. Some times we may be embarrassed if an argument we make is found to be incorrect or, in some cases, untruthful and/or part of an agenda or propaganda. Politics is like that - people make statements that frankly tick off those on the other side.

Sometimes things indeed go too far or people deliberately target others for abuse (trolling/flaming) and deservedly get suspended or banned, but that is very different from people getting a bit exercised by someone taking a contrary view or vehemently disagreeing.

Sometimes people do need to be called out if something they say is either factually wrong or deliberately misleading. That this person 'takes offence' at being shown up (not the same as trolling) for such things should, in my view, not be grounds for them to be suspended or worse. The light of truth is far better than the blunt instrument of the delete button.

IMHO, that's the way many millennial snowflakes and other activists try to stifle genuine debate by constantly trying to 'cancel' people by continually 'being offended' and mass reporting them to moderators or, in the case of social media platforms, top bosses to bully them into banning such people, when only a tiny minority of (very vocal) extremist activists are at work.

Thank you, Focussed - and Bolt on the other thread, for the information.

In the press release quoted by Bolt, the CEO of Heycar says:

“We will maintain this independence through the formation of a clear editorial code between the two brands, continuing the impartial tone HonestJohn.co.uk’s millions of website visitors and tens of thousands of newsletter subscribers expect. Users of the Honest John forum will not notice any difference.”

We need to take this at face value, whoever the ultimate owners of Heycar might be. A big part of what they are buying is HJ's reputation for credibility and impartiality, and it will be in their interests to maintain this.

"whoever the ultimate owners of Heycar might be"

Heycar is a brand owned by Mobility Trader Holding GmbH, whose shareholders are Volkswagen Financial Services and Daimler Mobility.

The UK subsidiary is Mobility Trader UK Limited, one of the two directors is an ex-director of Volkswagen Financial Limited.

The new owners should be bright enough to realise to realise that if this forum becomes just an echo chamber for VAG and Daimler it's provenance is going to be severely devalued.

The DSG DQ200 whistle-blowing came almost predominantly from HJ himself, through marshalling data feedback. VAG owner forums and enthusiast sites may have run their own grievances, but HJ, thanks also to his media and print positions, really shone the light on those issues.

DPF and oil dilution issues across multiple brands.

Also, the praise of Japanese and Korean petrol cars.

I would LOVE to know why the German Heycar owners have bought the website....

This from the press release that Bolt helpfully posted on the ORB thread:

"Having delivered independent motoring advice and vehicle reviews for the past two decades, the Honest John brand will provide heycar with access to an audience of more than 25 million site visitors."

It's to increase their profile. I've been interested in cars all my life, but up to today I hadn't heard of Heycar.

They haven't asked me to say that, and they're not paying me, but it seems to make good business sense.

Do they care about the forum? Surely the value comes from the reviews and articles. Isn't that what the vast majority of visitors read?

Obviously a forum doesn't make its owners money directly, but from that point of view its use is to attract people in the first place, and then to encourage them (by the various sidebars etc) to look at the reviews, articles etc. It isn't possible to know how many are so encouraged, of course.

I believe they also are an arm of Bauer Media, who own Parkers.

Really sad a site with such history and integrity going down this route. Personally I am not a fan of who it has been sold to and have opinions that would likely not comply with the acceptable use policy. Will monitor the situation carefully ORB being banned is the most bonkers decision in sometime and is a very early speed bump in the brave new world for the site.

Parkers used to have a really good forum, it was then withdrawn.

I've also just heard an ad for the new company. One of many promising the earth if you are looking to buy a car,

Yes I heard about them on a radio station a few hours ago, and as earlier I was looking for a civic to replace my car the search results brought up Heycar, they have a large selection of all makes though never seen them before

I would guess that with the new ownership one of the early changes to the website will be to replace motors.co.uk with heycar for the used car search facility. That would make sense of the remark about access to the site's > 25m users.

The regular users of this forum are insignificant by comparison so it is interesting to speculate whether the new owners would ignore it or kill it if their brands get frequent adverse comments. Of course the mods could be instructed to kill off any habitual critics and their posts but events today show that tactic can turn out to be counterproductive.

I’ve handed over plenty of money to them over the years both as a newsagent of 15yrs and a private punter. They’ve several great motoring titles in the portfolio. Modern Classics, Car Mechanics and Practical Classic in particular often coax the money from my wallet.

Indeed, but HJ is a consumer information site, cleansed of bias, advertorial and the all-corrupting need to attract big manufacturer advertising, but not complain too hard about their problematic products.....

HJ doesnt fit the Bauer portfolio. HJ doesnt fit a joint ownership of VAG and Daimler men.

I'm not optimistic
