With all the anti older drivers attitude most of us who are senior drivers take our driving seriously and practise good habits. I saw a guy with superb car control the other day, he was weaving in and out and avoiding other cars by inches at high speed, tailgating 'til the offending car got out of his way.

It wasn't an old fella was it?

Trying to get to his over 70 compulsory eye-test, on time! ;)

We have a game in the car..

Spot the "erratic/poor" driving ahead of us..

Guess the gender/age/ethnicity depending on where we are as to which criteria apply bonus points for spotting if using a mobile phone..not seat belted.. (Colchester is a hotspot for no seatbelts)

unattached dogs kids also give bonus points.

Take a trip to woolwich in south east London you'll have more points than you could shake a stick at within your first 5 minutes I guarantee it.

Always on the phone very poor driving. It's an area where uninsured unlicensed ect cars are. Whenever the police do their check points you see a fair number of mini cabs pulled over for said offenses.

I have to admit Im an erratic driver due to everyone else in Bromley and surrounds driving like it and if you dont your in trouble as no one likes a slow driver here, but I will not tailgate thats a no no....

Very true many tailgaters and people who think its on to try and speed people up in bromley and most of London to be fair but like you I don't tailgate I always try and keep a good distance shame some people are incapable

Interesting thought. I wonder if any calculation has been made as to the amount of energy/money to be saved if everyone drove sensibly. Looking ahead to avoid excessive or unnecessary braking. Slowing down when approaching lights, as opposed to 'racing' them. Starting off from lights at a sensible and correct speed, knowing you will see the 'boy racers' at the next lights. All this waste of fuel and kinetic energy and wear and tear on vehicles defeats me. It just makes sense to drive sensibly. The savings in time, money and stress are incalculable. Just s thought. Cheers Concrete

Observations i have seen with mine own eyes over the years at work.

Fuel on average anything up to 50% better depending on types of roads (even more if excessive speeding is used by the trashers), brake friction material wear multiple times better (at least 3X), tyres from 25 to 50% better wear, engine and drivetrain life expectancy extended several times, breakdown risk reduced, and all for near enough the same journey times.

IIRC we live in same county.

Suspect you will be as familiar as I am with the boy racer in his pimped up hatchback who tears through the lanes with dodgy overtakes etc and ends up all of 2 cars in front in the queue to join the A45......

It all looks different from the perspective of our age group, but turn the clock back to when you were a youngster. The freedom a car gives you and the pleasure of driving can be a heady mix. I always considered myself a sensible driver - indeed my Dad commented that he thought I was too cautious - but I don’t do now some of the things I did then. The traffic lights Grand Prix no longer bothers me, even though I can now afford to drive a car that would enable me to win most contests.

I don’t know how erratic drivers can be convinced to mend their ways. They can only get away with weaving in and out of other traffic (for example) because the other drivers make allowances. One day karma or other similarly daft drivers will deliver their come-uppance, although I wouldn’t wish serious injury or worse on anybody.

They can only get away with weaving in and out

My idea of weaving in and out is like everyone around London, stop start weaving around parked cars, timing it so you dont hit other cars (bit like dodgems but in cars)

when you get someone who has no idea the width of there car it takes ages to get through a road to the other end!

Slowing down when approaching lights, as opposed to 'racing' them. Starting off from lights at a sensible and correct speed, knowing you will see the 'boy racers' at the next lights.

Driving home last night about 10:15, on a straight road with very little traffic, I approached a temporary traffic control showing green. Because of its brightness it was impossible to judge the distance accurately, and although I was doing 40mph it seemed to get no nearer. By the time I reached it, it had turned to red, so stopped and waited for vehicles to appear. None did; eventually I got green again, which was so dazzling I could only just make out the obstacles ahead.

That is fine during daylight hours, but why can't a dark-controlled dimming system be included? Can't be that difficult, surely?

Make of this what you will but over the same journeys area, ect driving I can achieve at least 10mpg more than SWMBO without a reduction in speed and journey times. (Dont let her know I said this but her driving makes me fell sick)

We have a game in the car.

We play 'yellow car'. See John Finnemore.

Does wonders for the driver's perception of what's going on around them!
