I have been running my (new to me) 1.4 Golf on VPower to give it a good clean out. Wow it is extremely expensive these days. So far I have had one reward of £1.40. The official reward rate is £3 for every 300 litres, i.e. a penny a litre, so I wonder how HJ gets the £12 a month he has been quoting recently. Has he become a taxi driver?

Also the new system might work well on a Smartphone, which I don't have. Instead, on my iPad , it's very clunky with the need to login to activate the rewards. Even having done that the reward wasn't applied so I contacted the helpdesk. They said it doesn't work with all browsers! Mine is Google. They suggested I change it. For a whopping penny a litre? They are having a laugh.

I will be going back to my local Budgens BP for my next fill with a straight 3p a litre discount (5p I think for their premium fuel). It's applied immediately at the point of sale with just the need to show a local loyalty card. Simple.

I recently tried Vower with the app and shell GO+ my home energy company was taken over and is now shell power, and was supposed to get 2p a litre extra, but it doesn't work and locally theShell station is opposite a sainsbugs... and is a LOT more expensive than the sainsburys stuff

Gave up...

I had a new Shell whatever card it is.

Far too complicated system of rewards for very expensive petrol (OK if someone else is paying and does not care - in business, we forced car drivers with fuel cards to buy supermarket fuel and saved a fortune,,,)

Given up.on Shell.. (And V Power showed zero improvements measured on our cars)

I only use it because I live in an expensive fuel area and its the same price as nearby Tesco.

But I've long given up on the rewards, I much preferred the old card system.

There's a lot of Shell stations nearby, another one opened up last month and its much keener priced than all the others, we'll see how long that lasts...though it boasts a Subway and Greggs on site, which may well bring a good number more customers than the typical coffee machines which dispense stuff which might as well have been removed from your car battery.

Too true. When I was on long drives for work I used to carry a vacuum flask with hot water, some coffee bags and a few biscuits. Much better quality than the road house rubbish and also cheaper too. Win, win. I would stop in a park somewhere and sit under a shady tree for my break.

Yes it is more expensive for premium fuel. Speaking purely as I find, I have had an improvement from 42mpg to 48mpg using Shell V power. It may well be the same for BP, Esso etc premium fuels. The rewards are a bonus to me. I only drive about 10k miles per annum and a bit of that is abroad so medium usage. I use my i phone shell app and pay with apple pay. All quite seamless. I think I will use premium fuel in any case given that IMHO it does what it says on the tin! Shell stations, just like any others market their fuel for what they can get in the local area. In Sheffield where our youngest lives Shell is very competitive, but around here in Mid Kent not so. Local supermarkets (few and far away) do not seem to offer premium fuels so do not use them. I now intend to keep my current vehicle for quite a few years so want to keep it in good order. Fuel is part of that. Maybe HJ has his whole family using the app and the combined usage is considerable.

Cheers Concrete

Concrete I have used V power on and off for years but could never be sure it made much difference to fuel economy. On a recent 400 mile trip I got just short of 60 mpg on the computer, using V power. On the way back with the remaining third of a tank, I reset and it dropped to 55. On both legs I drove in a similar style. The jury is out.

I do think it's good for the engine in other ways though so will stick in the odd tankful. Maybe I am a sucker for hype!

It is a minefield this situation with fuel and consumption figures. I was taught to drive correctly which included being considerate to the vehicle, which tends to brings its own rewards in the shape of less maintenance and better fuel consumption. Different driving styles and all that. I have had mostly manuals but now with an auto I expect less mileage from my fuel. Having said that I was pleased with an average of 42mpg from normal fuel and even more pleased with 48mpg from V power fuel. This is an average of long runs (600 mile round trips) and local journeys. I think that is a good return from a medium size SUV diesel 2.0l engine and auto box. As for the effects on the engine, it is an unknown quantity. I service according to manufacturer recommendations and drive sympathetically so I expect the engine to be less stressed than otherwise would be the case. I do remember eldest daughter buying a one year old 1.6 petrol Golf. She complained of it running a bit rough. I took it out and agreed. She did use the cheapest supermarket fuel she could buy, bless her. I immediately filled it up with Shell V power and asked her to run normally for a week. She did a 45 mile round trip to work every day. At the weekend, Bingo. The car was running smoothly and the funny noises had stopped too. I put it down to the fuel and she has used Shell or BP etc since, but mainly normal fuel with the odd premium fill up. All unscientific and apocryphal but it works for me. I think I will stick with premium fuel for now. Cheers Concrete

I'm not sure that even a taxi driver doing daily airport runs would receive a reward of £12 per month as the Shell website extolling the benefits of the loyalty programme states that you can get "3% saving on up to 60 litres of fuel per month"

So if V-Power sells at £1.50 / litre (as it does at my nearest Shell) - the maximum saving I could make is less than £3.00

After using Shell Regular Unleaded Petrol almost exclusively in my 3 cylinder 1 litre T-GDI 5 door Hatchback for nearly 3 years now I have recently noticed a marked reduction in the level of 'Reward' received from Shell. I used to receive £2.50 after every 10 purchases of fuel but I have just received an e-mail advising me of a derisory £1.40 'Reward' after my tenth (actually my eleventh) purchase of fuel totalling 346 litres over a period of around 4 months at an average price of around £1.25 per litre - this represents barely one free litre of fuel per 346 litres purchased. However Shell also proudly advise me that they have or will offset all the carbon my driving has generated at an estimated cost to Shell of £4.16. Furthermore - a purchase of 46 litres, made on 21st December did not get registered as a valid contributory purchase because whilst the Shell Go+ card was scanned and 'beeped in' by the cashier I did not receive the customary e-mail - as this was in fact the tenth purchase and on inspecting my receipt later the next day, it was clear that the Shell Go+ Card had not registered as the receipt had a message at the foot telling me I should join Shell Go + to benefit from their 'valuable reward scheme'.

I have now written 3 e-mails to the Shell Customer care team with details of this registration failure since the first email sent on 22nd December 2019 but to date have received no acknowledgement of my complaint.

Thirdly, I have repeatedly been offered savings of £3.40 on any purchase of V-Power after making around 7 or 8 qualifying fuel purchases of Regular Unleaded Premium but cannot see the benefit as V-Power is proportionally much more expensive than any reward saving and I am not convinced that my direct injection petrol engine would perform any better on V-Power than it does on Regular Premium Unleaded 95 RON .
