Renault Clio III - Transfer of NCD - malct

just to follow on from my last thread regards car insurance and named driver in case someone can add more information.

didn't realise that i was able to transfer my NCD into my wifes name and i am wondering if there are any implications on doing this long term since my wife does more miles than me.

i was told by the insurance company that while my NCD are in my wifes name, i will not be able to use the NCD for any other car, thats not a issue since we only have one car.

is there anything that i should know about that the insurance company have failed to tell me.

i own the car, The insurance is in my name, but i am the named driver while my wife is the main driver using my NCD

if i was to be in an accident, How does that effect the NCD,

Is there a length of time in years that you can keep transferring.

My wife who has only passed her test 2 years ago has no NCD to her name, will she now able to earn NCD for her own use for later years.

any help and advice would be great, its a grey area for me since i didn't know that you could transfer NCD.

Think you've complicated things by having yourself as the policy holder and your wife as the main driver. It would have been simpler if she was the main driver and policy holder.

Although the NCD is in your wife's name (It's usually the policy holders name!), it is also tied to the car on the policy. If anyone on the policy has a claim/ accident that affects the NCD (doesn't matter if that's you or your wife).

Suggest you check the wording on the certificate of motor insurance/ schedule and policy documents very carefully.

You need to ask a few questions of your insurer.

Some companies will apparently allow a gap in cover of one or two years and still honour the no claims bonus built up previously

It is also apparently the case that some companies will allow a NCB to build up even as a named driver, not just the main driver.

This may be why some couples alternate their policies so both build up a NCB, or retain that already built up. I don't think there is any alternative to asking each independently as it is clearly down to indiviidual insurers. It may be worth going with a company than will allow this even if the policy costs a little more this year so you get the longer term benefit.
