I have a mark 7 golf, does the car have a valve where one could drian the coolant?

So what is your problem with my posting a reasonable question. For the record I tried doing a search on google and looking it up on a few forums to which I found no satisfactory answer. I will ask my local TPS branch to show me, helpful people TPS.

Check where the bottom hose attaches to the radiator to see if there is a drain tap there - built into the plastic part between the hose and the rad (usuallly attached to the rad by a quick release pull off clip and sealed by an O ring)

It can't be more than 7 yrs old. Why do you want to drain it? Coolant in our old Focus is 19yrs old. Can't think of a good reason to change it. Can think of a good reason not to; the introduction of a fresh supply of corrosive oxygen.

Coolant types and compatabilities are complicated, but the standard cheapo green stuff usually has a 2 year recommended life span.

I don't pay much attention to recommended oil change intervals (last fill was 6 years) because I have reasonable faith in oil, but I don't have any faith in cheapo Chiwanese coolant, so I change it pretty often.

My problem is not with the drain but the refill bit, which tends to leave air in the system on my car.

IIRC I've read this is also a particular problem with the Golf.

My solution was to boil the coolant by disabling the fan, but I believe you can buy a gadget that applies a vacuum during refill.

Nice to see a sensible observation concerning oil change (assuming low mileage) but I would have thought that in your neck of the woods all you would need is standard four billion years old rainwater for coolant. It doesn't go off and if the system is sealed any corrosion will cease when the suspended oxygen is used up. If you keep changing it you will introduce more corrosive oxygen.

Well, its a theory,and you could be right, but I'm not confident you are correct, because

(a) I THINK you can get electrochemical corrosion in the abscence of dissolved oxygen

(b) I THINK there is some oxygen access to the system via the overflow reservoir.

If water can get into the brake fluid,(and I know it can) it doesn't seem too much of a stretch that oxygen can get into the cooling system

I did leave it for a few years after I bought the car and it was pretty rusty when I finally drained it.

Its certainly true that I don't need antifreeze per se, and there is some stuff on sale (SONEX) that claims to be just an anti-corrosion treatment, but I dunno if its any good.

You're supposed to be able to test for electrochemical corrosion with a multimeter, IIRC looking for a voltage between the fluid in the radiatior and the vehicle body.

I have done this in the past and it was within the recommended limits, but I don't do it routinely, becase I dunno how valid/reliable it is, and you have to open up the system, introducing oxygen, to do it.

I don't think it is likely to work in the plastic overflow tank.

Usually on VAG cars the bottom hose is attached to a plastic "part" that is water sealed into the radiator via an O ring and a hose retaining clip (sort of U shaped). Pull out the clip to release. Always replace the O ring and possibly the clip as they can rust.

Seem to remember that ours used the hose clips that in theory need a special tool to remove but providing access is available a pair of moles work just as well. Definitely no O ring on the hose, the only one on ours I am aware of (due to it leaking) was on the thermostat housing.
