Which car has been the most awkward to change bulbs on? Rear bulbs on my Volvo V70 are a skin shredding contortionist job. Not needed one on my 2012 slk but needs a panel removing behind the front wheel to change a headlight bulb.

The worst I remember is my old mk2 Berlingo. It wasn't a difficult job at all, until I dropped the cap that goes over the back of the light down into the wheel arch and ended up needing to remove the wheel and liner to get it back.

The n/s one on that car was a PITA because of proximity to battery but not too bad.

Easiest was earlier PSA models including Pug 104 and 205 or Cit BX where whole headlight unit was retained by giant press studs and could be removed before detaching bulb connectors and replacing failed halogen unit.

Yes that's jogged my mind, it was the n/s. I probably didn't have the room to move my hand properly and lost grip of the thing

Yes, but you didn't really need to go even that far to get the bulb out ....

True but you could fit the bulb by eye instead of just feel and do it indoors.

You could even wash the whole unit to remove dirt/algae.

Worst one I've ever had to deal with (thus far) was my wife's 2004 Renault Megan CC...another one where you had to access though a removable panel in the wheel arch and do it virtually by feel...you really needed the hands and arms of a Barbie Doll..!!

Front side light bulbs are surprisingly awkward on my 120 series Landcruiser, i've heard of people removing the front bumper to access, but it's easier to nip one of the twin batteries off at a time (wired in parallel so no worries so long as you insulate the leads), obviously i fitted good quality long life bulbs.

Daughters Civic gave me a massive headache, one of the rear bulbs was blown and when i attempted to remove the rather horrid capless thing it somehow ended up inside the light unit, luckily daughter with her nimble fingers managed to extract it without me having to trun the car upside down.

I've avoided modern cars generally and european in particular for many years so haven't had too many problems personally, some lorry designs which were previously really easy for bulb changes have got worse in latest designs, headlight bulbs either needing child size fingers to reach through a tiny gap behind the bumper (previously you could reach down from under the front grill when raised), and weird sprung fittings where the previous twist and lock bulb clamps/holders never gave a moment's trouble no matter how cold it was, fortunately my current MAN is reassuringly old school in many ways bulbs fittings included, it almost never blows bulbs in the front light units anyway but when they do happen it's easy, 2 screw bolts and the cover panel unclips another 3 screw bolts and the whole light unit swings out on a hinge.

Hundreds of modern cars and vans running round with numerous lights out recently, no doubt the difficulty of changing something as simple as a bulb is part of the problem.

Vauxhall Corsa D & E, the dip/main bulb is a knuckle-skinning, fingertip-slashing swine of a job to change. The problem is the plastic waterproof cover on the back of the housing which is secured by three very tight and almost inaccessible clips. You need Donald Trump-size tiny hands, because the airbox is in the way on the driver's side and the battery / main electrics panel on the passenger side.

Some people on the Corsa forums actually remove the front bumper and the entire front light unit rather than trying to swap in situ.

Had a Lada Riva for a short time. Needed a long box spanner to remove the rear light lenses - none of my tools would fit and needed to buy the right one.

With Citroen C3 the headlights an absolute pain. Decided in the end it was well worth paying a Halfords technician to suffer the frustration rather than doing it myself!

I help out in an auto-spares shop and we like to be helpful so often fit the bulbs free of charge as a "thanks" to the customer. There's several cars I won't do though: the later Corsa as Craig said. You struggle to get the headlight bulb out on the pasenger side and struggle even more to get the new one in. The later Astras ( with a panel in the wheel arch) can be a pain. Some of the small French cars are ........ challenging, the Twingo being one of them.

Mk1 Ford Focus has a cover over the bulbs which can be a pita, but the Mk 2 was a doddle to do, complete headlight out in 30 seconds.

I think French cars take the ultimate prize here. It’s as if the makers have gone out their way to make a simple job as difficult as possible. Megane Scenic 2 is probably the worst . Ford and Volvo seem to get it right . Usually a couple of screws and/or some slider pins and the headlight is out .

That could account for the large number of cars in france that drive around with assorted lights not illuminated when they should be. One headlight or rear light out is common around here, and not on really old cars either.

Renault Modus is a bumper off job to change headlight bulbs......

I had to change a headlight bulb on our Corsa a few weeks ago and checked on You Tube. It seemed to be a pig of a job. However when I got under the bonnet it was a piece of cake, and I have clumsy hands. I wonder if it's because ours is a base model and maybe it's less crowded in the engine bay?

I also changed a front indicator bulb last week and it took about a minute.

So not all bad......

I`m not keen on the Civic headlights, (I know people moan about H******** but they did my headlights for a fiver fitting so with bulb costs £20 all in) special offer bulbs... but the backs are really easy though, the 9th gen never seem to blow unless they are led, though never looked? apart from checking they work
