Vauxhall Astra 1.6 SRI - Astra J 1.6 Petrol sounds like a Diesel - Radicalrooster
Hi all,

I’ve recently bought a 2011 Astra 1.6 petrol so I’m just getting used to what’s ‘normal’ after 8 years of Civics...

With the bonnet open, the engine sounds like a rattly diesel to me! Here’s a video youtu.be/1RNAi9h1O6g

Looking online there’s a lot of ‘it could be this or that’ such as cam pulleys and hydraulic lifters.

Has anyone else had experience of this or have a good idea as to what it could be?

It’s still under warranty so I’ll be taking it back, I just want to go there with an idea of what it could be so I’m not fobbed off with ‘they all do that mate’.

Thanks!

EDIT: Thought I should mention, it didn’t sound like this when I inspected before buying it. Also the garage I bought it from gave it an MOT, Service and new cam belt kit before I collected it.

Wrong oil ,or timing belt fitted incorrectly ? Also check to see if you can remove the oil filler cap with the engine running.

Thanks for your reply.

With the engine running I was able to open the oil filler cap and I could feel suction when it was loose.
