Guys and gals, I get it. Some of you really love stance and some of you really hate it. This is an argument that will never go anywhere because it is purely subjective. Stance lovers will never convince a hater to love it, and a hater will never convince a lover to hate it.

So please, stop wasting your breath and clogging up threads with this senseless bickering. If you don't like stance, downvote and move on. We do not consider it a s***ty car mod here. You're welcome to your opinions, but for love of god knock off the bickering over it.

Open discussions are absolutely okay, but keep it civil. If it turns from a discussion to useless s*** flinging, you will get a warning. Keep it up and you will get a temporary ban.

No stance please. We're British.

Who is this guy? Have we got a new Mod ?

(Indeed we haven't, Andrew. This poster is a man in urgent need of a taxidermist.)

Stance? What kind of stance?

Instance? Resistance? Distance? Circumstance? Assistance? Substance?

Does he mean dance?

Yet another spammer is about to post some crummy links. Talk about an amateur - they can't even get our language down correctly. Idiot.

I think its a (stupid, naturally) US automotive yoof fashion thing.

Came across it by accident when I was looking into DIY tyre fitting, an ability I used to have but am having trouble reviving.

I THINK its associated with "stretched" tyres (well, tires) which are too narrow for the rims.

This is considered to look "cool".

I often have trouble distinguishing the cool from the cretinous, though its more of a problem in the context of motorcycles.

I'd agree that tin is probably incoming.

Nicely put - a generally true observation.

It's a copy paste from reddit and stanced cars look like clown cars. They are dangerous and should be crushed, with or without the driver inside, either is fine.

Bit of a strange post.

Stance is anything to do with altering wheels, tyres, suspension geometry to customize the way the car looks on the road eg, dramatically altering wheel camber, lowering suspension etc.

I missed the link with youth culture or American slang. I thought stance was a position you adopted when forming an opinion. Silly me.

I suppose the main point he was trying to make was about the futility of argument amongst a group about an esoteric point of taste. Sometimes the odd thread here segways into disagreements, usually about a personal statement that someone disagrees with. This does deflect from the point of the thread. However I have not detected any real animosity in the past on this forum. A difference of opinion is expected when so many members have an input, but the gentlemanly behaviour usually shines forth.

"I have not detected any real animosity in the past on this forum. A difference of opinion is expected when so many members have an input, but the gentlemanly behaviour usually shines forth."

I don't wish to fan the embers, but there have been some very unpleasant spats here. Whether they represent "real animosity" I'm not sure.

I'm sure you're right in assuming the geographically confused OP was trying to stop arguments about obscure and ultimately unprovable points of style.

I'm afraid the internet in general has seen more and more examples of people getting nasty with each other because they are unable or unwilling to argue in a rational way. Any disagreements seem to degenerate into personal attacks. And that's before we take into account the trolls whose sole purpose is to upset people.

Agree with most of that FP. You are correct about some nasty spats, but people seem to cool off when they realise what was said in the heat of debate. The anonymity of social media in particular gives some bullies/cowards the protection they don't deserve. This in turn allows insults to be freely meted out. Something they would never do in face to face contact. Like the vast majority here I treat the forum and the debates as if it were a general discussion in the pub or over a coffee. I do disagree with some opinions and hopefully point that out in a constructive and non antagonistic manner, as do most others. I am sometimes taken to task and defend my position or realise I was incorrect and say so, gracefully I hope. That is the real beauty of civilised debate. Informative, constructive and respectful.

Indeed - like you I'm not too worried provided that the vast majority stay civilised even when they disagree. If a thread does degenerate, I can close it although I'm reluctant to prevent free speech, which within reason is what a forum is all about.

One particular playground bully seems to have disappeared, and we have managed very well without him. He was forever having a go at John F, whose unfailing courtesy in reply was an example to us all.

I love what your auto-correct did in your previous post, Concrete: segue became segway. Didn't George W. Bush fall off one of those? (Actually, maybe you meant segway, with its implication of drift and precarious balance....)

Well spotted Avant. I did mean segue!! I don't know wether it was I or the American spellcheck system which seems ubiquitous now. The number of texts I have read after sending and had to send a corrective message to follow. My excuse is I am from the steam age, but trying to master technology. Cheers Concrete
