The DPF and EGR valves were moved to directly behind the engine to make it run hotter and burn soot off more easily.
The common problem with the newer EGR valves is less to do with the massive build up of soot that the older type suffered from but more to do with soot and ash getting into the actuating mechanism past the valve stem and making it stick. The 1.6 TDi has always suffer from this but if you have had the emissions update it is many times worse. If this turns out to be your problem then to date I have not heard of anyone successfully sorting it with cleaners.
When you say the maintenance light is that the engine symbol or the glow plug symbol or something else. More often than not its the glow plug light that comes on for EGR problems.
