Lexus 450h - Water leak into cabin - the bottle man

I have a 56 registered Lexus 450h. This is it's third winter but last winter I found water soaking the carpet on the drivers side. It eventually dried out, with lots of newspaper and hair drier use and I had no more problems over the summer. It doesn't get any wetter when using a hose to clean it.

Now it's coming back. There's no obvious water track or drips, and the heater and radiator are not losing water. Our local garage has cleared the drain tubes and could find no reason for it to get wet. The passenger side is fine. The carpet is wetter on the offside, near the door hinge.

An additional problem that may or may not be associated is that the heater won't send hot air to the footwell, but that's been so since I got it.

For the record, it has 200,000 miles on the clock, uses no oil and I get 33mpg with mixed driving.

Any ideas?

A common entry point for some cars is via the interior of the doors, if the membrane behind the door-card has been broken or come away from the metal of the door. Water runs down the glass, gets inside the door, and should emerge from drain points at the bottom corners. Those may possibly be blocked, but I think a faulty membrane is a more likely cause.

You could try sitting in a car-wash and see what happens ....

Hi. thanks for your reply. I'll get my local garage to have a look at the membrane. There doesn't appear to be any water ingress when I use a hose and in the recent heavy rain there wasn't any coming in when I went through deep puddles. In the meantime I'll try and find the drain holes.

Check behind the panel in front of the door under the dash, the water may be coming in past a grommet in the A pillar

also has it got a sunroof with a drain tube going down the A pillar sometimes they cause leakages
