Yes its legalised cheating of the public. There is no reason with a computerised system that tax cannot be calculated on a daily basis and changeover then would be only a day of double charges.

It may be possible but for whatever reason it's not been done that way. At most rates of VED, at least during era when CO2 was determining factor, the daily rate is nugatory. If John has £25 at stake then the Focus must be quite expensive on VED.

The rules are that cars must be continually either taxed or SORN. If there's a gap then DVLA can enforce but they may do this via administrative fines rather than prosecution - cost may mount up.

Done this twice in the past 3 years with no difficulty at all.

First time we acquired a car from a family member. It was about the 8th of the month thus when they were refunded the VED they lost about 22 days. When we taxed it we lost about 8 days. DVLA gained a months VED.

When we sold the car a year later it was at the very end of the month thus we lost just a couple of days. The buyer would have lost almost a month (if he bothered to tax it I suppose - who knows).

No problem as far as I am concerned. Same rule applies to all except those who change more frequently stand to loose more days.

DVLA doesn't allow for time in postal transit, they calculate from date of arrival of form, which naturally was September in our case.

So you may as well put any date-of-sale you like on the V5 when you send it in.

That's why I did it online - and it's easier. But it doesn't allow you to postdate the date of transfer/sale, so I did it on the 31st Oct. Today Mrs F received a cheque dated 1st Nov for £220-83 which, seeing as she sent £265 in Aug for another year commencing 1Sep means we have actually paid for Sep and Oct, despite them saying it ran out on 1st Oct.
