Anyone got one of these collecting dust in their garage. www.edp24.co.uk/news/cosworth-sells-for-80000-at-k...0

All of the hot Sierras had a high rate of theft and few original cars survive. 200bhp is not much nowadays but for a 2l back in the day, it was a lot!

If only. Though if I did the first thing I would do was sell it as I much prefer the much cheaper Sapphire 4wd Cosworth. Even that kinda underwhelmed me the first time I drove one though. I found the slower Pug 405 Mi16 or Nissan Primera 2.0 ZX the better cars.

Interesting piece on 5th Gear the other night when they pitched the latest Fiesta ST against an original Escort Cosworth.

The Fiesta was about 3 seconds quicker round the track.

Not good build quality Sierra's of that era or in fact any era come to that. Back in the day some of them were showing bits of rust at 4 to 5 years of age. Before paying that price would have made sense to put a mini camera inside the vulnerable areas of the inner bodywork. Everyone differs but that kind of vehicle just does not warrant that kind of money. Dated poorly built and by current standards not that quick either. Sure they can be tuned if desired for 400bhp plus but certainly not going to last very long with that output....

Couldn't you say the same thing about the (300bhp) 1962 Ferrari 250GTO which sold at auction last year for $48.4 million?.

Sure they can be tuned if desired for 400bhp plus but certainly not going to last very long with that output....

My understanding is that the racing versions could produce 550bhp reliably.

Horses for courses. A car is worth what folk are willing to pay for it, i.e, this car is worth the price it fetched.

I consider myself a petrolhead and, imo, the aforementioned Ferrari is in a completely different league to a Sierra Cosworth. But take my mate Ben (who would consider himself a car fan), if he won the lottery, he would have no interest in buying a classic Ferrari or any other fragile Italian supercar. What he would do, is buy absolutely the best Sierra Cosworth he could find. Why?, because that is the car he lusted after as a youth.

That's right BBD, it is nostalgia driving the prices of these Fords. I grew up in that era and I too would love one as a toy in my fantasy garage, in those days they were the "coolest" things on the road and really great fun. But apart from the trim, tuned motor and beefed up brakes etc they're standard ford build, which was only average back then. 80k? !! I can imagine paying that for something with motoring history eg RAC Rally car or Cooper S Monte Carlo car but for an old Ford? No way, and I drive a Ford too!

Expect it's been bought as a bit of an investment so they won't be worrying about that.

550bhp sure but in a reliable way not convinced certainly over a fair amount of mileage. Upgrading the Cosworth YB lump would mean upgrading the Borgwarner box plus shafts etc. These YB units have their roots based on the Pinto which is not a bad thing in some respects but hardly a super car heritage.

I liked the Sierra, especially post 1990 models which were better made. I flogged loads of them without any real trouble, just the 1.8 diesel which was never good at starting in cold weather. Comfy, practical, mechanically simple and cheap for parts they made excellent big family hacks. Rust as ever was and still is with Ford.

If I found one of those I'd be after the £80,000 as quick as possible!
