Never thought I'd see an MG badge on something like this.

Does seem like a curious direction to go in, but is it really such a leap from SUV to pickup?. Also, it does make some sense given the same company own both the MG and LDV names. LDV would presumably offer the more 'work orientated' versions with the MG ones offering more bling and equipment?.

If it's the badge you want I'm sure one could be obtained fairly easily and attached to a more appropriate vehicle :-)

I've always thought a sports-pickup would be a vehicle I'd like to own. I can remember doodling them in school exercise books.

Not like this of course.

This just looks like the standard Bloated-Blingmobile that pickup trucks have become. In this case it'd be tempting to blame the Chinese, if we didn't know it was the Americans, and ilka wannabes, who set the tone.

The Australians have sport utes, (like the US Camaro) which are essentially muscle cars with a load deck.

That has some appeal, but I'm thinking of something more lightweight and minimalist, essentially a traditional 2-seat RWD sports/trials car with better air-adjustable ground clearance (simple air-adjustable suspension kits can be surprisingly cheap), twiddle brakes, and a small load platform.

An MG badge wouldn't look out of place on something like that, and it'd likely be a commercial disaster which is fully in line with MG tradition.

I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures of an early Lotus 7 ancestor which looked like what I describe, but perhaps I dreamt it.

Re the US, I think you mean El Camino?,

The Camaro was and is, just a muscle car.

As for the Lotus 7, never come across anything like that. However, the bit behind the front seats does look a bit like a small pickup bed?

The MG Extender. That seems like the result of a heads together at the office where they went through various suggestions until they were so bored with trying to find a good name, they convinced themselves that the end choice was a really good one.

Is the body galvanised and not going to rust like some recent MG examples? Will it do better than 3 star crash rating? Will they put support in the bulkhead like other manufacturers or just forget it due to cost?

Oh right. Should have checked.

IIRC there was a Subaru car-based pickup that was sort-of a lightweight El Camino, but 4WD.

The Lotus-ish thing had an actual flatbed, and more ground clearance, so was probably a trials car. Perhaps if rules allowed they could load up the bed to improve traction, dunno. I had a bit of a Google last night but couldn't find it.

I suppose what I'm thinking of might also be describable as a slightly stretched, more practical "beach buggy". Or if they'd done a longer Volkswagen Thing/Trekker, perhaps based on the Variant, that'd fit.
