I really wouldn't take much notice of the recommendations, because that's all they are. Applying common sense is far more important. Many car manufacturers say their car will go 20,000, 30,000 miles or whatever between services, but in reality none of us use our car in ideal conditions which makes the service recommendations meaningless.
You don't say what age your car is, but if it covers average annual mileage it has to be around four years old. Older if it's a low mileage car, and if it is then regular oil and filter changes are even more important.
Changing the engine oil and filter should really be done at least once a year, and the fuel filter, air filter and spark plugs changed annually. Nothing apart from the cost of the parts is to be gained by not doing it, but if you saw the mess that can be done by running the engine in old oil for too long you'll realise it's worth spending a few quid to keep it in good condition and running well.
