The days have long gone when the in line fuel filter on an old car would be bunged up with rust particles from the petrol tank and debris from poorly maintained petrol station tanks. The advice used to be go to the next one if you saw a tanker refilling them, thus stirring up the crud. The fuel pump failed on our Focus at 112,000 miles and I had the original filter changed at the same time. On dismantling it I was surprised to see how little crud there was - needn't have bothered. Probably because there is also a filter as part of the pump in the tank, as there probably is in yours. So, I would leave it well alone.
