Does anyone have further details on the 1.0 and 1.3 petrol engines from Fiat?

from the autoexpress fiat 500x sport article

The Fiat 500X Sport is offered with a choice of two petrol engines. The entry-level model comes with a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit developing 118bhp, while the range- topping variant comes with a turbocharged 1.3-litre four-cylinder with 148bhp.

Are these fiat engine or from another manufacturer?

Fiat tend to use their own engines only. Even their version of the Mazda MX5 the 124 Spider had Fiat motors shipped to Japan to be installed instead of sticking with the cheaper and more sensible approach of just sticking with what was there already. I’m trying to think of any Fiat’s that use another manufacturers engine and the only thing I can come up with is their version of Mitsubishi’s L200 and Suzuki’s SX4 petrol. Both of which are/were really just bought in and rebadged.

I believe these new motors are all Fiat/Chrysler’s own work and hopefully they’ve some good old Italian spirit included as they’ve always been good at making small petrol engines.

Fiat as a firm have been struggling for years. They desperately need to gain higher margins but the name doesn’t carry enough prestige to allow sales of higher value SUV’s etc that are required. Better bet would be to focus on the cheaper cars they do well but they’ll need to manufacture these outside of Italy if they want to make any money. I’ll never understand why they moved production of the Panda back to Italy from Poland which made the older, much cheaper and far better selling model.

The GM-Fiat engine alliance was meant to share engine, both ways - GM infamously got access to Fiat diesels but I'm not sure which GM engines were used by Fiat.

“The GM-Fiat engine alliance was meant to share engine, both ways - GM infamously got access to Fiat diesels but I'm not sure which GM engines were used by Fiat.”

As far as I’m aware that deal was solely about Diesel engines and despite what GM marketed the deal as it was in reality nothing more than GM buying Fiat designs and all the inherent reliability woes which came with them.

The 2.2 JTS petrol that appeared in various Alfas was a GM sourced engine, breathed on by Alfa.

I think the 3.2V6 was too, inexplicably replacing the glorious 3.0V6 'Aresi' in the GTV

How did I forget that? Yes they were both GM sourced and the 2.2 was actually less reliable than the Alfa motors it replaced with a tendency to eat its timing chain and the V6 which was reliable had less character than the traditionally glorious V6 Alfa being just a Vectra GSi/Omega V6 Elite motor with a fancy exhaust system.

Can’t find out any info about these engines, strange.

All I know is they are not based on the old ‘fire’ Fiat petrol engines that while basic where very reliable.
They are not used in any of the Fiat products assembled in Turkey (Tofas) which suggests they might not be sourced from Fiat?

I would be inclined to wait until these units have been out a while. 60k hours of testing in the link and some virtual analysis does not fill with confidence. The Hyundai and Kia 1.0 turbo units seem fine but they based on the solid Kappa engine design. Ford's suspect 1.0 Ecoboost has many tales of woe. Hopefully the new Fiat design will be chain driven. I would sit back and wait 18 months to 2 years if possible and let other people beta test them.

The best small turbo and most reliable is the Citroen/Peugeot 1.2 pure tech
