Death by dangerous driving- he will be sentenced later

Defence Solicitor

Mr Curry suffers from anxiety and has difficulty interacting with people."

Prosecution

The court heard that he had convictions for road traffic offences including driving while disqualified, without insurance or dangerous driving. Curry has also served a seven-year sentence for grievous bodily harm and robbery.

Are the prosecution & defence talking about the same man?

Yes, if you finish the defence solicitor's statement: "Mr Curry suffers from anxiety and has difficulty interacting with people ....."

".... so he often beats people up, and resorts to robbery because he's a thug who can't hold down a job."

I found this recent case harder to swallow: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-49483561

The driver only got 6 years for killing a biker while driving the wrong way down a dual carriageway at night, immediately after snorting 5 lines of coke. He pleaded guilty, so it didn't go to trial. The UK sentence tariff for death by dangerous driving allows for up to 14 years. The fact he was DUI should have seen him get near the maximum sentence.

William McLean got a one-third discount due to an early guilty plea, so the starting point was 9 years rather than six. But I agree it seems to short for something that must be near to the worst example of dangerous driving, with no mitigation from the defence - I would have expected something like 12 years discounted down to 8.

A nice long stretch in solitary confinement should be ideal given his problem interacting with people. He sounds like a really nasty piece of work.

I quite agree with the other comments. Sadly, he doesn't appear to the type to learn his lesson. Harsher sentences required for such individuals, even with guilty pleas. IMHO, time should be ADDED if he misbehaves whilst inside, preferably back up to the maximum permissible sentence length.

No - he shouldn't be in solitary - that would prevent the other prisoners from "interacting" with him - I'm sure they will be keen to "interact" with him being as how he is such a hard case! - LOL
