Accused of hitting a parked car with door - LilianS

Hi All,

Advice please...

Have just an hour ago been accused by a rather angry woman at a retail car park of hitting the side of her car when I was getting back into mine. She had this massive 4x4 parked really close side by side to my Vauxhall Astra.

When I was getting into the driver's seat, my door did touch her car but by no means was it a hit. I am quite small but even with my size I would not have been able to get into my car without opening the door gently as much as there was space to. We were both in our cars at the time and I wouldn't have thought anything of it had her passenger not come out and started inspecting the side of the 4x4. I heard her say to the woman, there was no damage. The raging driver then approached me and started shouting that I hit her car! When I said, I didn't, she banged her handbag hard on my car's bonnet and shouted some more before walking off.

I was so shocked. I didn't take any pictures of her vehicle and just drove off. Have never had anything like this happen before. For the future what's best to do in these situations, please? Thanks so much.

Keep calm. Don't respond to aggressive, paranoid behaviour.

Do take photos, if only to show the other person you are serious about defending your position.

Thanks, FP! It was one of those moments, when you think to yourself, am I mad or is this other person mad?..It's always afterwards that I think of better ways to have dealt with an unexpected situation.

Care in the community has a lot to answer for, yesterday morning in a long queue in a city street a young female attempted to do a U turn in front of oncoming traffic, the chap behind her and in front of me started to move forward as she (he thought) turned right, of course she couldn't make the turn in one, and he hadn't blocked her reverse shunt, but she still mouthed off a barrage of abuse at the fellow enough to make a team of road builders blush, sorry i couldn't help but laugh at this spectacle.

Have you checked your bonnet for deliberate vandalism damage from the wielded weapon, vis one bag, not as the old bill would be remotely interested.

Thanks, gordonbennet, your message made me smile. It’s always when you don’t expect things!

No damage to my car’s bonnet, luckily. Why can’t we all at least try to be nice to each other?..Silly question, I know.

All part of life's rich pattern I am afraid. As much as you wish to react, and it is easier to say than do, take several deep breaths and think about what has been said. The calmer you appear to be, will take the wind out of their sails as they have not rattled you and that means they have to start thinking. A process i suspect they are unfamiliar with! Certainly take photos which can demonstrate to both parties what damage, if any exists. Usually you can tell if it is a rant, in which case it is unlikely to escalate. Then just part company quietly. You seem to have done all those things so I think you handled it well. I always try to park away from entrances and busy spots. You find more room elsewhere and you can pick a better spot to park. Better a 50 metre walk than an argument. Cheers Concrete

Havign been in a car when a door was banged onto the side, I can uderstand the reaction - it is pretty loud even when no damage was caused.

I second that. You think your door touched but the other driver may not think so....

Hmm... I can't say I do understand the reaction--there was no thud and no damage. For that to be otherwise I'd have to damage my own car too and I am quite fond of my Astra. To come out shouting and banging other people's cars for no reason is lunacy. Wish I had a face you couldn't mess with... At 35 I still get asked for ID at Tesco if I happen to fancy wine with dinner.

Thanks, Concrete! I'll bear your advice in mind for the next time. Am sure, there will be one!

Hi the first thing you should do is keep calm and try collecting the evidence by photographs and also talk with others who are witnessed the whole situation. So that you can assist legal authorities with maximum explanation.

All this confirms my suspicion that the ideal UK urban vehicle would be a really rusty, dented, mud splattered old Land Rover, towbars and tow balls back and front, with a dog cage in the back containing a hungry Rottweiler.

Or get a trunk monkey!
