Neighbours down the street acquired a 2013 DIG-T (Renault Tce?) last year, and although fairly happy with it they are having to top up the engine oil about a litre every 2k miles so asked my opinion, noticed some report of a similar issue on the French press https://www.connexionfrance.com/French-news/Renault-cars-have-severe-defect-says-consumer-group from May this year, dd anyone came across this before?

Generally, oil consumption has to be worse than 1 litre per 1,000 miles before dealers/manufacturers regard it as high oil consumption.

If the neighbour bought from a dealer within the last 30 days, they can reject it and get their money back.

So long as the engine isn't puffing smoke a bit of oil usage wouldn't worry me unduly.

Rather see and know about it, than be running some current Diesels which their owners might think use no oil between extended services but in fact unburned fuel is replacing the oil in the sump.

For a large engine after 100,000 miles this would be acceptable, but not for a tiny engine with only around 50,000 miles. For comparison, our Focus 1.6 Zetec required a single 500ml top up between the oil changes at 54,500 and 66,100. Even now at 140,000 it uses far less than a litre every 2000 miles.

" having to top up the engine oil about a litre every 2k miles "

Acceptable limits...

(Although if it happens regularly across all the models in which the engine is used, expect a rash of blown engines due to neglect)

“" having to top up the engine oil about a litre every 2k miles "

Personally I would not find this acceptable. Over the past twenty years I have had both new and second hand cars from various manufacturers including Nissan, Ford, VW, Honda, Toyota and Suzuki. Covering between 10 to 12000 miles a year I have never had to top up engine oil between annual services. Generally I research the cars I want to buy and if I found such oil consumption to be the norm I wouldn’t buy it.

This engine has a rather nasty reputation for failure I’m afraid. I’d be planning its replacement and looking at something with a much more reliable Japanese designed petrol motor instead of the Renault engine in this so-called Nissan. A Ford C-Max with the bulletproof 1.6 Yamaha designed petrol makes for an excellent family car.

Found that some clients in France had some success in getting Nissan to put things right.

From what I gather this is a software update that helps to control piston ring flutter and so oil burning. I will recommend them to visit Nissan and report back.

Nissan Europe are mainly re-bagged Renaults , a sad demise to a once good company

There is a growing problem across europe with the oil consumption of this engine.

This is an article in a local online newspaper from this week - in French, use google translate if you can't make sense of it.

Translated extract.

A collective of Concarneau (small town) denounces a defect on engines of Renault, Dacia, Nissan and Mercedes. While the UFC-Que Choisir ( a french version of Which) has put the builders on notice, a European class action may be considered by individuals.

I would be very concerned in reference to this, I have just had my engine replaced that was doing exactly this and to be honest have had a total nightmare with Nissan in getting the repair covered.

The car is a 1.2 Dig petrol, 2014. Engine issue spotted at 33k, 2 weeks from the end of its warranty.

Dealership didn't inform nissan until after the warranty had expired and deleted the original job card that showed it had been brought in whilst still under warranty (I was asked to bring it back for further compression tests but had been told by the dealer they had informed Nissan, which they hadn't).

If its over 5 years old, Nissan will pretty much wash its hands of it and wont offer any support. They need to get it booked in asap, for the tests, but I can 100% say it will be effected by the engine issue. Tell them to google qashqui forums, there is a huge post (60 pages and counting ) of people with the same issue. There is also a technical document which has been leaked, which will provide the engine number range of effected engines.

Where were these faulty engines made? Was it a rogue box of wrong size piston rings? Will we ever know what the cause was?

What makes the RenaultNissan unit so problematic? Apart from Ford other manufacturers dont seem to be having issues. With Ford its pennypinching accountants. Is this the case with Renissan ? Suzuki dont seem to have a problem I have a 1litre and a 1.4 litre petrol turbo and I m very happy with them.

Renault cost cutting and I suspect a rush to bring into production as later then competition..

Same as Ford..

Actually, many do. Sometimes it's a fundamental design problem, e.g. Vauxhall's grotty camshafts, Porsche's weak camchain intermediate sprocket bearing; sometimes it's inappropriate use of specialised technology for general purposes, e.g. nikasil cylinder liners; sometimes just a bad batch of faulty components e.g. Peugeot's puretech BIO cambelt or, as here, dodgy piston rings.

My relative has had their 2015 Qashqui repaired in an agreement with Nissan. They have a copy of a document, which lists all engine numbers affected, built between 2014 & 2019. All the 1.2T engines in the list were fitted with inappropriate oil control rings. The document suggests that affected engines may fail at around 30,000 miles, Their's failed at 32.000. To mitigate the risk, Nissan/Renault sent out a bulletin to dealers telling them to remap the ECU to reduce crank case pressure. Anyone who bought one new in that period and had it serviced by a main dealer, probably had their ECU altered.

In France, there is an attempt to bring a class action about the issue, which affects Renault, Nissan, Dacia and Mercedes cars.

The symptom is excessive oil consumption, oiling up of spark plugs and reduced tension on the timing chain. Although Nissan are accepting warranty claims at under 30,000 miles and under 5 years old, they are under pressure if confronted by threat of legal action. It is a question of how far the customer is prepared to fight.

I don’t know what other dealers are doing. A friend with a garage business has a 2014 Renault with him, with exactly the same issue.
