Vauxhall Astra 1.8 vvt 2006 - camshaft worn and loud, likely any other damage? - KCSRenault

Hello,

My sisters 2006 55,000m, astra is making a very noticeable camshaft noise, when running.

No oil lights or fault codes are stored. The VVT solenoids have been modified by the local vauxhall garage and are not to blame. The noise is definitely coming from the camshaft area.

Will there likely be more damage than just the camshaft?

or are these engines similar to older vauxhall engines which you could put a camshaft kit on and problem solved?

My dad did one years ago on a vauxhall 1.6 8v and had no further engine problems, however i am aware these engines are a lot more sophisticated than those old units.

She has had the oil changed every two years and 5,000 miles, as only does 2,500 a year.

Is it worth getting the camshaft changed or better with a new engine?

Many thanks

If the noise is a "clatter" from the top end, I doubt if the camshafts are to blame. I would be looking at some other problem causing this noise .Possible oil starvation or issues with the Vvt sprockets . A new engine on one of these is surely more than the value of the car?
