These designations are utterly meaningless and no more than marketing fluff. I suspect even the sales staff struggle because it is so confusing.
There was nothing wrong with 1.6 TFSI or 3.0 TDI on the back - you knew, so why mess with an easy to understand system, Audi? It has to be down to marketing.
The number conveys nothing to me when sitting behind such a vehicle. Even Mercedes confuses, as an Merc A180 has a 1.5 Renault diesel engine and produces 108 bhp or could have a petrol engine with more power, so it appears merely a kind of model reference, but again is twaddle. Bit like using the tag A63, which is a road in Yorkshire to most of us in the UK.
BMW is a bit better, with 218, 340, 530, but even they blur the lines with 325, 335, 435 etc, for cars with slight more tweaked engines that the 330, 430 etc.
I often interface with marketing people in my daily job, and have formed the opinion they seem to think themselves to have a superior intellect. Personally speaking, most are up their own backsides...
