Hi.
Considering a 2013/14 Xc90 r design as a replacement family car.
Have 2 kids and a large dog. We are active and go camping lots. Current car is an 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander which has been outstanding, but it’s time to change it.
What are people getting mpg In real life out an Xc90 and would you recommend one?
Will be about 10k miles per year. Mixture of country lanes and motors way driving.

Thanks

I've found compared to real cars I've had the HJ real life mpg isn't too far off

For my 2014 Skoda Superb 1.4tsi the site says 42.7mpg - I 've averaged 45.7 - now about 77k miles (mine is the facelift where the official was a bit more economical compared to the earlier version)

For my previous 2003 1.9pd Skoda Superb the site says 51.5mpg - I generally got over 50mpg

Clearly this depends on driving style and myself I've found the petrol car more load/driving style sensitive.

The main reason I've avoided SUV's thus far has been the size of the boots as we also did a lot of camping and we've been spoilt with the Octavia MKI and Superb mkII in this department although the Superb I wasn't quite as big - The Yeti boot seemed tiny in comparison though. Saying that the XC40 has about 460 litres, not quite my current 590 litres but not bad.

Big comfortable luxury family SUV’s. I really like them but don’t expect to buy or run one on the cheap. They’re thirsty (early 30’s at best) and resale values are very dependent on dealer or genuine specialist service histories.

If you’re on a tight budget or doing a substantial mileage I’d probably look at a Honda CRV instead but again I do see the appeal. Think of it as a reliable Range Rover with bearable running costs. I personally wouldn’t go for the R design however, it doesn’t suit the nature of the car and the firmer suspension and lower profile tyres harm the ride quality. This is a luxury SUV not a sports car.

I owned one for a short while. It was a poor example so I got rid but the kids liked it and I would get about 30+mpg on a run. The drop down tailgate was useful.

The R design has stupid low profile tyres on big wheels; to be avoided if possible, ruins the ride.

Avoid one with the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel. This engine had problems with the EGR valve on cars of that vintage, and Volvo's fix was in some cases only temporary.

If mpg is important, why not go for an Outlander PHEV?
