Used car never ending faults - Jarrett
Hi, back in April I bought a 67 plate Jaguar XF Sportbrake S. Unfortunately I’ve had various problems with the car. The panoramic roof leaked so that was replaced under warranty. It now creaks unlike before. I’ve sent it back but garage said it’s ok. I expect the roof to be silent. Does anyone have issues with noise from their roof? The roof is fixed panoramic.
Whilst they had my car I was loaned the same model. This car drove so much better than mine and was certainly punchier at lower revs. Best way to describe it is in normal mode it performed like mine does in dynamic sport mode! Again I’ve questioned this. An update was made but it’s no different. The garage say it’s fine.
Latest fault is the air con, a new blender was fitted but didn’t cure. Now a new heater box is being fitted and that means dashboard out. I certainly have no confidence that this will be the final fix as with the roof I’m expecting creaks and rattles (
I’ve questioned rejecting the car to my local dealer but I bought it from another approved dealer and am now using my local jaguar dealership. I have emailed the salesman I dealt with but no reply so far. I don’t think I’ll get anywhere with rejecting it if I’m honest so prepared to go through the motions of just sending it back until it’s right. It’s been in the garage 30 odd days since I’ve had it which is gutting. Only had a courtesy car for part of that too.
If anyone can advise on the roof and performance I’d be grateful and if anyone fancies telling me I’ve got a right old lemon on my hands that’ll be fine too.
Thanks.

Unfortunately it seems you’ve bought a Friday car. People will be along to diss Jags but it happens with every brand particularly non-japanese. Best course of action is to get rid by rejecting the car, don’t waste your time with this lemon. I believe HJ has resources on this website for how to reject a car, and make sure you do it pronto before you’re stuck. I agree with your concerns about the work to the dash, the factory build was bad to start with on this one, a dealer’s apprentice won’t be much better..

Hope you can get rid and have a better experience with your next Jag.

Thanks for the reply. I agree it appears to be a lemon. I suppose I’ll have to wait for the air con work to be carried out and see where it’s at. The issues with the garage saying it’s fine and me saying it’s not I wonder if that’s strong enough grounds for rejection. Will they just try to mug me off over it?
Using another dealer for carrying out the work goes against me as well I suppose because the selling dealership can wash their hands from the work carried out so far.
What is the success rate of rejecting approved used cars within the first 6 months? I presume they will want it in to look at, if they say it’s good enough then what? Straight to jaguar direct? Then the 6 months will be up and I’m stuck! What an expensive pile I’ve got!

Perhaps you're finding out why the previous owner got rid of it?

Their stance is a typical industry one. They are trying to chance it. They know the car has a dubious past, somewhere it's prior faults will be listed.

You need to look at how HJ tells you to reject, do it NOW. Dont dither as they will use all manner of tactics to push you over the 6 month limit.

They garage will probably tell you Jaguar won't accept the reasons.Your contract is with the dealer, not Jaguar, and you are rejecting the car to the dealer. (Personally, I'd park it over their entrance with some big lemon stickers on until they agree, but that's my bloodimindedness at work.)

Given the trade is in a mess, JLR in particular, I suspect you face a tough time to win, but you've paid good money, lost faith, and the law is on your side technically. You could get an independent inspection to strengthen your case, but if the value of the car is more than £10k, small claims court is not available should that be the only option and lots of good money could be thrown after bad.

Trading in for another marque could be an option before it breaks down again - BMW 5 series touring, Skoda Superb Estate, Merc estate? Not what you want, but neither is an unreliable luxury car.

Good luck.

Far too late in reality to reject the car (yes it is in real life) the performance issue is simply you saying one thing and the engineer saying the opposite.

Friday cars lol this is the 21st century the engine doesnt know what day of the week it was installed.

Croaks and groans again subjective. Maybe to you but another owner may consider that complaint ludicrous (am just saying thats all)

Air con clearly a fault. You'll spend 1000s in real time and effort though attempting to reject cars at this stage

Far too late in reality to reject the car

No its not. The OP bought it 4 months ago thus still 2 months to go before the OP needs to prove anything about the faults being present when it was bought.

But as I discovered recently when I rejected a much lower value item than a Jaguar sellers will lie hoping that you will not pursue a claim and simply accept they are legally right to refuse a refund.

The fact that the OP has not used the seller for warranty work will complicate the matter since its only fair that the seller should ascertain that all the info is in fact correct before accepting (or rejecting) the claim. But if the facts hold up, they as the seller are legally required to provide a full refund less a reasonable sum for the mileage covered (it is after the 30 day cut off for 10% refunds).

I would suggest that the OP goes to see a specialist solicitor that is experienced in these matters. It will cost but so will selling the car at a huge loss.

I can understand the irritation with the creaking sunroof but keep sending it back to get it fixed and involve Jaguar customer services if they don’t get it right quickly. Apparently they’re very proactive about customer service. A slight creak isn’t really grounds to reject a car especially if the dealer hasn’t had a good chance to sort it.

Even my otherwise very well made Honda CRV had a rattle from the above head interior light switches which took two attempts to sort. Then later a squeaking clutch pedal was noticed and quickly rectified. Three years later it never made another irritating noise other than those emanating from the person usually parked on the passenger seat. I’m glad I didn’t reject what became a very well liked big car.

As for the performance difference, are you comparing like for like? There’s two different versions of 2.0 diesel, one with 163PS engine and 380Nm of torque and a higher output version with 180PS and 430Nm of torque. It won’t make a huge difference on the road but the latter will feel a bit livelier. Even if it is the same is the mileage similar? A higher mileage ex-loan car or salesman’s hack will always be a bit quicker on account of it having been hammered senseless in its short life to date.

Thanks for the replies so far.
The issue with the roof is that the garage have said it’s ok when it’s not. They’ve already had it back in and fitted new headliner clips but it’s the glass that creaks. Once this air con fault has been sorted I’ll see where I stand with the car and will certainly be taking it to the garage where it was bought.
The loan car was the same as mine 3.0 v6.
