My in-laws are looking to buy a seven seater auto as a family runaround. The choices are Toyota Innova, Rush or Avanza.

Favourite is the Innova 2.8 Diesel auto. Bearing in mind there are no motorways where they live, although it’ll probably have a couple of 60Km round trips every week, are they likely to have DPF problems. I believe all new cars there now conform to Euro 4.

I have posted this question on “The largest motoring forum in the Philippines” but gassing on forums doesn’t seem to be much of a thing over there. You can almost see the tumbleweed blowing through most forums, so I’m not holding my breath waiting for any replies.

Thanks for any advice

Tricky to answer a question on a vehicle not sold in the UK!. Maybe you should search for more specific info on the Innova, whether that is a road test or owners review. Also search on Youtube as there seems to be plenty of folk posting their own 'reviews'.

The only thing i can tell you with an above average chance of being accurate, is that the 2.8 diesel you speak of seem to be the same used in the UK market Landcruiser. It shares exactly the same capacity and produces about the same power. Maybe GB can offer up some info re that engine if not the car itself?.

Yes, I realise it’s a bit of a long shot. I’ve searched YT and it’s difficult to find any reviews or websites that aren’t sponsored by commercial organisations. There just doesn’t seem to be a culture of reviewing stuff over there and forums are next to useless.

It is info on the engine I’m after rather than opinions on the car itself. Bearing in mind the manufacturer and the target market it’ll most likely be as dull as ditchwater but absolutely bulletproof reliable and with none of the fragile bells and whistles that seem to be compulsory on European cars.

Thanks for your reply

The only info i have on the 2.8 engine (presumably this is the lump) is from John Cadogan via Youtube.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYA5QYf3ZCg&t=24s there is another video about this published by him around the same time.

I have no idea if the DPF is fitted in the Philippines market.

Me? i'm going to run my 3.0 D4D non DPF for as long as i can.

Funnily enough, I was helping my sister in the Philippines select a car, and the same ones you mentioned all came up. The Innova is probably the best, but MUCH bigger than the Avanza and Rush.

The Avanza seems robust and designed for the bad roads in the Philippines; as a compact car the only drawback we found was more limited ground clearance. The Avanza is one of my favourite taxis, it seems to age well.

I have only been a passenger in the Innova, but was very impressed, and it seems as robust as its predecessor, the bulletproof Revo. The Rush had only just some out so there was not much feedback, but I didn't get the impression it would be as good.

In the Philippines it is probably best to stick with Toyota and go for a popular model, as in the long term you won't have problem with parts availability.

As to DPFs, with the state of traffic and very low average speed in many places, I cannot imagine how they would regenerate effectively; maybe send an e-mail to Toyota Philippines. But an automatic is advisable due to the terrible traffic.

Excellent, thanks.

The reason I was favouring the 2.8 Innova is that the Avanza only comes with a 1.5l 103 BHP engine, and coupled with a slush box auto and a 7 seat body will probably be underpowered.

Where they are in Bohol there are quite a lot of open, fast roads full of 4 x 4s and commercial vehicles. The overriding driving philosophy seems to be the bigger and faster your vehicle, the more aggressively and inconsiderately you drive. Basically, “get out of my way, I’m coming through”, and the RTA stats reflect that.

It’s that reason I was thinking the faster Innova would be better at keeping up with the more loony elements on the road. Unfortunately it’s a lot more expensive so I’ll probably end up making a contribution.

We get the Innova in Taiwan, though I wasn't aware it was a diesel, and perhaps it isn't here. Diesels don't make much sense in Taiwan due to the pricing, traffic and generally low miles, and they'll likely make even less sense in the future.

There was a 4X4 Mitsubishi Delica (succeeded by the Space Gear) that had a diesel turbo. I believe it was a fairly fragile engine, though you still see them around.

This thread (URL below) covers similar ground to yours for Taiwan, and features the Innova. Goes on a bit, though, especially that Ducked character

If the emissions standard for the Innova is the equivalent to Euro 4, I doubt it'll have a DPF, probably just a cat- my 2005 L200 pick-up 4D56T diesel is euro 4 and just has a cat - built in Thailand.

According to some discussions, the 7-seat Innova is, or was, an aftermarket modification, and thus illegal in Taiwan.

(All vehicle modifications, of any kind at all, are illegal in Taiwan.).

This probably won't apply in other markets.

Thanks for all the replies.

So in the end he decided to go for the Avanza with a 1.5 petrol engine. Probably just as well really.
