I watch a lot of Scotty Kilmers YT videos and wondered how people here rate his knowledge and the advice he gives? And do you have any personal favourite mechanics on YouTube?

Scotty Kilmer and other YouTube mechanics - Happy Blue!

I have just started watching Scotty. The guy is a workaholic, producing videos every day and presumably fixing cars at the same time (although i suspect he is close to retirement now).

I reckon he gives very good advice but i'm not sure I would want to do a lot of the stuff he says you can do yourself. Note that he seems to use a lot of UK imagery for his pop-up pictures over his shoulder..

If he and HJ ran the car world we would all be driving Japanese made cars, that were 20 years old and serviced every three months....

Mustie1 is my favourite fixing things channel. He takes on a lot of none runners, from lawnmowers to motorbikes and pick up trucks.
He has such a relaxed, natural way with the camera that you almost feel you’re there with him doing the job.

Thoroughly recommend you have a watch.

I do also enjoy Scotty, but he’s not very hands on which is the bit I enjoy watching.

I wish Scotty would be my mechanic!

South Main Auto Repair.

Nicely laid back delivery style unlike some of the more"energetic" presenters (Scotty!)

I find him a bit irritating

Came across this oldskool funk guy when I thought I'd blown my head gasket.. Has a go.

There was another vid where he home made a head crack tester with some heavy perspex but I couldn't find it with a quick look.

Was impressive

Eric the Car Guy is pretty good too, though a bit more "mainstream".

I don't know of any consistant non-US sources though

For those with a more technical understanding of cars , hows about this guy :www.scannerdanner.com/

Dunno.

I THINK there's some electronics inside my alternator, but apart from that I wouldn't currently have much use for this "more technical understanding" of which you speak,

Yet still iit manages both to move, and lately to malfunction.

Might be useful in the future though., if there is a future.

Does he have a dwell meter?

Beware "Project Farm"

Does stuff like running engines with water in the sump until they break. and calling it an "ëxperiment"

Popular with the LOL crowd m****s, which of course means very very popular, and probably makes a lot of money.

If you have any mechanical sympathy you might find it annoying

Old Project Farm using water to clear out his mower's carbon deposits was also a 'fave' of mine. You have to laugh at what some of these Yanks will do.

Scotty Kilmer's old school (he's going deaf [he is approximately HJ's age], hence why he always speaks loudly) and hates a lot of stuff about modern cars. His fix as regards sticky (hydraulic) power steering helped my car work better.

He's handy for the small to medium sized jobs for those willing to take the chance in doing DIY maintenance, assuming you have all the tools and your car is reasonably user-friendly in that regard. There are some DIY jobs I haven't tried as my car's specific sub-model has a more difficult to access parts for the jobs I want to do (cleaning the MAF sensor, EGR and throttle body).

No I don't.

I do water decoke routinely. Has a sound basis in O level chemistry.

That does make it rather too scientific for Project Farm, but I suppose you can't be stupidly and pointlessly destructive ALL the time.

I don't recall using significant quantites of water to clean the inside of an engine when actively running it being in the user manual...

If I recall, Project Farm nearly destroyed one of his mowers by doing this in one of his 'experiements'.

There are more things in heaven and earth than there are in the user manual.

Project Farm specialises in destroying engines. That's how he keeps the punters entertained.

If you overdo the water you could get hydro-lock and bend a con-rod.

That'd be a daft thing to do, so I try not to do it, so far with complete success.

The success is probably mostly due to it also being quite a difficult thing to do unless you try really hard.

Gosh a Dwell Meter....that took me back to setting the points on my first cars then setting the timing by draping a coat over my head so I could see the timing marks with my barely glowing neon timing light.

I don't have a dwell meter. Probably hard to find now, especially here. I had a Gunson one in the UK but I dunno what happened to it.

I'm thinking I might try an oscilloscope to investigate the cars intermittent kangaroo impersonation. Apparently its possible to make one from an Android phone.

Used to like Eric the Car Guy when he was just regularly showing repairs but lost interest when he started doing his Fairmont Project.

Chris Fix has been good aswell.

Although not strictly a mechanic ( self taught i think ? ) . Savage Garage is my current personal favourite if you like to DIY as much as possible with cars like I do then you will enjoy his content !.
