Some people will do anything to support their team, it seems ....

When I was uncomfortably scraping a marginal pass of a PGCE (computing, biology and general science) many moons ago, one of my teaching practice placements was at a rather expensive private school.

Oak-panelled staff room interaction time.

Patrician dominie better-make-the-pleb-feel-at-home/intimidated stylee

""Hows your cricket?" ses he

"I don't have a cricket" ses I

Lead balloon, Tough crowd.

AND they wrote me up for poor staff room interaction in my placement report.

Still don't have a cricket,

The Hillman Avenger was sold in the States as the Plymouth Cricket. Doubt many left as Avengers are very rare these days. I wonder if anyone ever said "I am off to the cricket in my Cricket"?

George Bernard Shaw(who was Irish)is supposed to have said "The English have no concept of eternity, that's why God invented cricket for them" Being Welsh, I have to agree. :)

I can only assume it is easier to do this if you have Singapore or Indian Passports.

I've seen a few of programmes involving western European/US/Canadian residents where they try and do a similar trip and the paperwork for the people and the cars is a nightmare and can prevent the journey.

I know someone who wanted to drive his motorbike as much as he could on a trip from UK to New Zealand. However he quickly found out there was no way he could get into Russia due to UK visa restrictions. That meant Georgia via Turkey, but eastern Turkey wasn't somewhere he was advised to visit alone and crossing the Caspian wasn't easy. In the end he shipped his bike from Istanbul to Delhi and spent time in India and Nepal.

He then shipped it to NZ due to problems getting access to China.

Someone once said something along the lines of "Hell is an endless cricket match, with a break for the Tour de France every 1,000 years".

Cricket, the Marmite of sports. I love it, son hates it.

I cant understand how you can play cricket for a week.....one team ends up with more runs.....but the match is a Draw...Beats me.

I wasn’t surprised to find that they had driven all those miles in a Toyota. However, I was surprised that it wasn’t an Avensis.

I'm afraid to say that as a proud Yorkshireman, and now an adopted Geordie, I hold myself up as a missionary in my local pub.....converting Toon Army fans to a sensible thinking mans game....... Yes ....CRICKET!!! It has not been easy.

I've now succeeded in a full conversion of the most anti-cricket member of the congregation, assisted by England's progress in the World Cup. Much to the disgust of his younger son and many of the regulars.

Cricket appeals to fully thinking human beings, including my wife. Football appeals to total idiots and thugs with the attention span of a gnat.

Discuss, but only if you have a sufficiently agile brain to put forward your logic!

Well Leif and Badbusdriver.....if you didn't find the Cricket World Cup Final today totally rivetting......Then I would check your respective pulses!!!

The viewing figures on Channel 4 today must be massive.

Next doors dad and son spend most of their time chucking a ball around at a net, looks like netball for boys. Now that ain't sport?

Most sport is for the "must have it now" mindset. For many a two hour sporting event is optimal given other demands on their time. Hence the popularity of football, rugby, tennis, athletics etc etc - all of which is accompanied by media glitz and special effects designed to maximise income.

The 20:20 cricket experience falls to engage me - it is like other sports. Over in a few hours, not remotely subtle, just crash bang wallop.

The 50 over game lasting a day gives scope for judgement, tactics, weather impacts, pitch condition, balancing runs scored against wickets lost etc. I can't think of another team sport that does all this. There are a few of similar duration - eg: golf masters, snooker etc but they are not team games with all the other tactical variables.

So I enjoyed the final today but understand the unretired will find it difficult to make the time for more than a few hours entertainment.

Fair enough, according to my watch my resting pulse is 36 bpm. Rather than watch cricket, I picked cherries, made jam, skated, and annoyed the neighbours by shooting pucks into a net. I admit I do like the sound of a village cricket match, but not to watch.

I agree it was a fascinating game, tho I didn't waste most of a day glued to the telly, I watched in short bursts. Glad the lads won, but I can't help thinking they didn't really deserve to, and the Kiwis certainly didn't deserve to lose, with the fluky 6 and then 4 more fluky overthrows soon after. Strange coincidence that while the super-over was being played at Lord's, Djokovic was just managing to beat Federer across the river.

Yes-we won an enjoyable cricket match. However BBC News are still treating it as if we won world war three with a million pound lottery win for everybody in the UK.

Clam down dears.

Maybe because I've been a lifelong Cricket player, coach, occasional umpire and spectator of the sport, I found yesterday's spectacle the most exciting, captivating and enjoyable sporting event that I have ever witnessed.

That view was well supported by all the congregation of my local pub.....most of whom are dyed in the wool soccer fans ...with whom I've had many a heated discussion regarding the relative entertainment value of the two sports. Having said that, comparing a Newcastle United Premier League match with a major International event is probably always going to be skewed my way!
