Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the price of second hand Aston Martin Cygnets. They were a Toyota IQ city car with a tarted up interior and body trim with identical mechanicals. They cost about £30k in 2011 when a top of the range IQ was about £14k which was ridiculous difference. Second hand 2011 Cygnet now c£40k while 2011 IQ c£3.5k. A lot of money to demonstrate you are a prat.

The Cygnet came about because at the time Aston felt it had to lower its overall emissions, but not only was the car a sales flop, but i think the regulations changed so that low volume makers had either more lenient targets to meet or were exempt. It was also seen as the perfect car for an Aston owner to use in the city. And while the Cygnet was a lot more expensive then an iQ, it did have an awful lot of hours spent on it getting the interior completely done over in materials an Aston owner might expect. As for the 2nd hand values, they are worth as much as folk are willing to pay for them, regardless of how ridiculous that may seem, and i have absolutely no doubt that they will keep their values as there were so few sold.

I have the highest regard for the iQ. From a design and packaging point of view, the car is a masterpiece, and while i personally wouldn't dream of shelling out for the Cygnet, even if i had the money to spare (i'd rather the design purity of the Toyota), i can see why some would. Horses for courses!.

I wonder what peak prices were for such abominations as the Panther Rio and Vanden Plas Princess 1500. No accounting for taste...

Aston Martin Cygnet - Paying to be posh - badbusdriver

Wow, the Panther Rio, i'd forgotten all about that little triumph Dolomite based gem!. Had a look online, and could only find one for sale (on a website i have not come across before). The car is in need of total restoration and a price of £3.5k is being asked, Optimistic?, yes, probably. All that bespoke interior trim would cost an absolute fortune to restore.

The Vanden Plas?. Sorry for the pedantry, but the Princess (assuming we are talking about the BMC ADO16 based car and not the Austin Westminster based car with that name) was either 1100 or 1300. The Vanden Plas Allegro however, was available as a 1500. The 1100/1300 fetch pretty strong money, i don't know if it is still the case, but i remember reading that they are very sought after in Japan!. Here is one on Ebay for £13995 though,

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VANDEN-PLAS-PRINCESS-1300-AUTOM...o

But even the Allegro's fetch a decent amount, there are two on Ebay, one at £5995 and this one for £2k more,

Another more modern example of this type of thing is the Mercedes Citan, which is just a Renault Kngoo with a big Mercedes grill grafted on the front. And sticking with the three pointed star, there is also the Nissan Navara based X-Class (though it would appear a little more work has been done to differentiate it from its humble origins!)

When the Cygnet was launched I knew it was one to keep and lock away. I wish I'd had the cash to buy one.

With 30 year old Fiestas selling for over £10k, the Cygnet is looking at one still worth buying and locking away.

The other bonus is it will be the most reliable Aston you could ever buy!

And the least likely to rust! I've seen how they used to build them at Newport Pagnell.

Buy a few used IQs and Tipp Ex "Cygnet" on the back . Make about 35k instantly!

The world is very odd isnt it.

My mum has an IQ, I was doubtful at first, but for a small, very easy to drive and park run around, it is perfect!

A ridiculous car with a cult following. Probably the best made and most reliable Aston to date too.

Didn't you have to be an Aston owner to buy a Cygnet new? I guess that would enhance the rarity value.

Just had a look on Autotrader and Ebay and between the two sites there are 4 Cygnets for sale. The cheapest is £27999 and the most expensive is £45000!.

Just to clarify just how expensive that is, the cheapest Aston on Autotrader, if you include insurance write offs, is a '96 cat D DB7 for £13950, pretty much exactly half the price of the cheapest Cygnet!. Cheapest V8 Vantage (with low miles) is a 2006 4.3 manual with 46k miles for £25995, which is surely a bargain for a car like that?.

Bargain? The ancient Cologne 4.3 with manual box? You must be joking!

Now here's a bargain....

www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/20181004115...1

..much better engine, lots more power, reliable ZF box, quattro....and much more comfortable seats - for less than a third of the price! Admittedly higher miles and a year older, but I'd bet it would be more reliable.

Aston Martin Cygnet - Paying to be posh - badbusdriver

Is it likley that someone considering an Aston Martin V8 vatage would also be considering an Audi A8, regardless of how much power it has?.

"Bargain? The ancient Cologne 4.3 with manual box?, You must be joking!".

The use of the term bargain here is more to do with the likelyhood of the Aston's value increasing (very). It is very doubtful they will ever get any cheaper. As for the "ancient" engine, that was (loosely) based on the Jaguar AJ-V8 which was introduced in 1997, only four years before the Audi W12.

"much better engine"

Surely that depends on what you want from said engine and where it is located?.

"lots more power"

The Audi, far from having lots more, actually has 16.5% more power (from an engine 40% bigger), but it weighs 27% more (around 425kg heavier). This gives it a power to weight ratio of 222bhp per ton vs 242bhp per ton for the Aston.

"I'd bet it would be more reliable"

I wouldn't!. From what i have read, the V8 Vantage is a very reliable machine. Here are a couple of quotes from the buyers guide on the Evo magazine website:

• Engine The V8 frees up noticeably with miles and is at its best once past the 10K mark. Virtually bomb proof, higher mileages are fine. Sometimes the alternator belt can squeal from cold but there is a fix using a revised idler pulley. The only notable failures have been due to the engine being revved to the limiter when cold.

• Transmission Again, very strong. It’s not unusual for first and second gear to be difficulit to select on the manual ’box when it’s cold. A revised oil spec can help, but its usually best to just take it easy until things have warmed up a bit. Abused clutches can require early replacement. If treated properly they should last for 40K miles, but if ridden they may only last 10K.

The only 'limo' i'd be thinking of in the same breath as the Aston would be the Bentley Arnage. And while (unlike the Aston) it really does have an ancient engine, that doesn't stop it comprehensively humbling the A8 W12 on torque (surely the most important figure on a limo?) with 616lb/ft @3250rpm vs 428lb/ft from 4000-4700rpm. Available from around £15k for the 400bhp model, or from around £18k for the 450bhp model (which has even more torque)

Looking back at the Panther Rio Especial, in 1975
It cost over £9000, if you added extras of Aircon and and electric sunroof. More expensive than any Jaguar at the time. An Aston Martin V8 was around £12k . A humble 1600 Cortina could be bought for around £2k .

According to Wikipedia there were 38 of them made between 1975 and 1978, so it certainly is a rarity!. It states that the Jag XJ12, at £7496 was nearly £2k cheaper than the Rio (£9445), and that the Dolomite Sprint, upon which the Rio Especial was based, was £3283.

A friend's Aston DB2/4 has a truly ancient engine, made circa 1956. He still wouldn't sell it for 6 figures he has been offered!

Beautiful!, i much prefer these to the later DB5 and DB6.

And while that engine is ancient, it was designed by W.O. Bentley.......
