Electric cars to emit noise - Sofa Spud

Will petrol cars like Rolls-Royce, Mercedes and Lexus, which are almost silent, also have to be fitted with a fake engine noise?

Electric cars to emit noise - Hugh Watt

Mainly for the preservation of phone-gazing jaywalkers, I suppose. Maybe the next Android upgrade should include a radar-based collision alarm...

Electric cars to emit noise - corax

I take it that this fake sound will only be emitted at low speeds. Most noise on cars these days is tyre noise, especially with the fantastic road surfaces we have now.

Last I read it is for the pedestrian as all hybrid and EVs are really quiet at low speed, and don't even make a noise with their tyres, I was in my high st yesterday and a Prius creeping along wasn't heard and had I not looked would have walked into it and there are a lot of Priuses about now

they also slow traffic down as they save their own fuel while everyone else burns their`s keeping in a lower gear behind them lol

Usually minivans saving petrol holding everyone else up like you say saving fuel in ev moad going below the speed limit

imagine a nation of EVs driving slowly to save electricity, and all making a strange noise, its going to be a nightmare, but then with the cleaner air we will live longer and take twice as long to get from A to B

hope it won't be message "warning vehicle reversing" as given out by some lorries etc.

Zermatt banned combustion engines some years ago. As I recall the EVs make an Alpine cow bell sound.

Adding engine noise smacks a bit of the man with the red flag walking in front of early cars and the first railway carraiges being modelled on horse drawn ones. I am sure more imaginative solutions will be found to the EV noise issue that will make the present solution look quaint.

They were talking about using an engine revving sound according to how hard your foot was pressing accelerator pedal, type of engine sound could be adjusted according to your taste, ie if you wanted big V8 sound you could switch to that, the speakers being put under the grill and one under the rear bumper

whether this will happen is anyone's guess? might be a good idea for those used to standard engines in cars as no one looks out for EVs while walking

Apparently the driver can turn the noise off at speeds below 12.5 mph. So what is the point of a sound system that can be de-activated? Does it automatically turn itself back on at 13mph? I would not want to be hit by one even at 12mph

If people looked up from their phones and paid attention to their surroundings then we wouldn't need EV's to make a noise.

Particularly blind pedestrians - always staring at their phones... .

I wasn't on about blind people who when I've seen out walking tedt to take as much care as they can to not get run over.

Last person that walked out in front of me was a mid 20s woman with headphones in staring at her phone not paying attention to her surroundings not a blind person.

And most EV's admit a whirring sound when crawling along already.

There are more Hybrids around than EVs and they are quiet so you cant hear them, though would agree that too many people concentrate on their phones and not where they are walking

almost hit a few people in my high st because no one checks the road for motors and with headphones on, Just walk across without looking, annoying thing is, they haven't a care in the world and don't seem to care

You said if people looked up from their phones EVs would not need to make noises...the noises are for people that are blind so need to be able to her them.

Are mobility scooters going to be included as blind people can't see them either what at about push bikes.

Most blind people tend to take more care than people who choose note to look up from their phones when crossing the street.

Theirs no need to be so pedantic.

Yes, don't see why they could not be included.

Blind people will take more care but something like this help them out. It's not about being pedantic it's about wanting what is best.

Blind people use smart phones a lot.

Apps for navigation are very useful as they speak directions,

the idea was it turned on at or below 10mph, and couldn't be turned off, its there to warn the Blind/disabled people its there so will be dangerous to turn off for certain people, and asking for trouble imo

Electric cars to emit noise - Vitesse6

Spoilsports, it is quite amusing to creep up behind some unsuspecting person when moving slowly in EV mode.

Electric cars to emit noise - SteveLee

I get this a lot in car parks with my hybrid car, I tend to put the wireless on loud and wind the windows down in car parks - it's the only way of warning people of my presence.

I want my car to sound like the "cars" in the Jetsons - always loved that sound!

Perhaps we’ll be able to customise the sounds, a bit like a ringtone, you could have that annoying frog sound, or a beep, beep from the roadrunner cartoons...

I expect they will come up with an annoying sound that nobody likes, it would be just like certain manufacturers would do to annoy people, bloomin frog is one lol

Yes the Crazy Frog should keep 'em on their toes - mind you, that's a two-stroke frog, can we still use it with all the anti-pollution stuff about?

Electric cars to emit noise - Bolt

If the EU has their way they will be killed off like they suggested cows should be due to rear end pollution, could be an explosive mix the cow and frog

Thanks for the correction though I remember it was suggested by some group to do with climate change and vegans, so I don't think it was never mentioned

I'm sure it's been mentioned...but the EU and some climate change/vegan group are 2 very different groups...

You wouldn't think so the way they carry on, back to noises, I read manufacturers have asked to use there own sounds in EVs, so every car model made may have its own sound, that'll be interesting

To help pedestrians recognise the sound of a car, it might be an idea to fit a small diesel engine.........

Perhaps engine sound will become available at all speeds otherwise electric Ferraris/Corvettes etc will sound like Fiat 500/Toyota Aygos!

Electric vehicles already make a noise in the form of a smug condescending holier than thou whine from the driver's seat.

Electric cars to emit noise - Avant

There could be a market for some enterprising business to produce 'heritage' noises for electric cars to make, depending perhaps on where the car was made.

British - the flatulent sound of a Morris Minor 1000 on the overrun, or perhaps a 1950s Commer lorry.

French - Citroen 2CV.

German - original VW Beetle.

Swedish - Saab 92.

Italian - someone trying to start an old Fiat 500.

Japan - quite hard to think of any memorable Japanese automotive noises Maybe a Subaru flat-four.

I was thinking exactly the same thing, this could be a business opportunity for someone - provided EU regulations don't prevent fiddling with the noise emission kit.

Our neighbours had a Zoe, it made a strange unappealing droning/humming noise. I always thought it would sound better with a V8 noise. They were very pleased with it but the renewal lease was hugely increased on the deal they got so they've now gone back to petrol.

There should be a Dyson option. When you take your foot off the accelerator it makes a weird ‘boing’ sound. I suppose we could also have Formula 1, a Dalek (exterminate) and Stephen Hawking giving a lecture on quantum gravity.
Electric cars to emit noise - Warning

That could be annoying in the morning when it is 5am. There are people who go off to work every early hour when in the winter, leave their engines running, go indoors for a cup of tea, whilst their windscreen is defrosting.

Dont know why they don't park their cars outside their own homes.
