I did a couple of years as a service inspector for a major manufacturer.

I was always a bit wary of extremely clean workshops with rows of shiny tools hanging on the racks - it usually meant that not lot of work got done there.

The busiest and most successful workshops always had a bit of oil on the floor and the blokes had dirty fingernails (before the days of rubber gloves for everything)
