As noted in the news section of the site, handy reductions on fuel prices, which have resulted in only 1p difference in the two fuels, currently in Kettering Diesel is 124.7 at Morrisons and Asda., last week i noticed Diesel at 154 at some MSA's.

Handily i had a fuel voucher from last week's M grocery shop which i used filling up on the way home, so an extra 5 p off per litre, not a fortune saved but better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

I wonder if Diesel is going to stay closely priced to petrol for the forseeable, and is this related to differing sales volumes as the demonising of Diesel gathers pace...if the trend continues will the govt see a handy excuse to raise the fuel tax of demon fuel.

No different to every summer. Less demand for diesel so price relative to petrol falls. That said it was 8p a litre more at a local BP yesterday.

Could the lower price in the summer is due to less demand for kerosene heating oil, which is only slightly more volatile than diesel? Maybe the two oils share a common path at the refinary?

It's both of those reasons: diesel and heating fuels are part of the same fraction when refined. Also diesel is used as a fuel for back-up electricity generators for the Grid and for industrial purposes, which tend to see more use during winter months.

The latest club price for my central heating fuel is the lowest it's been for months - 43.21 pence per litre, plus 5% vat. It must be tempting for country folk to syphon off the occasional twenty litres and add it to around twenty litres in the tank of their old diesel cars....or even their new ones. I was told it has red dye in it, but peering into my tank it just looks straw coloured.

I think it's more the chemical tracer they look for if they dip the tank of your car. But I've never know a car to be tested it's more commercial vehicles or the odd farmers landrover/ generic 4x4

In over 40 years of lorry driving, only had the tank dipped by C&E once, back in 1977, never had any of my many Diesel cars or 4x4's dipped.

I've seen them checking fuel of course, but invariably its the usual suspects, surprising May didn't ban them from selecting the most likely candidates for checking at the same time she was demoralising/castrating the old bill during her tenure as the most useless home sec in living memory.

I've been driving lorries since I was 21 (12 years) and never had my tank dipped but all the companies I've worked for have always run by the book and held s good standing with vosa now the Dvsa.

Like you say GB it's the usual suspect's that the go after.

When I worked on a Plant Breeding Station we used to get our LWB Landrover stopped fairly often, then waved on when they found it was petrol (We towed a miniature combine harvester for which diesel was said to give insufficient power)

Just before leaving for Taiwan I bought a 40 quid Perkins diesel Maestro with the intention of running it on kerosene, not realising that The Man had banned the sale of bulk kerosene a few months previously.

Was still very economical even run legally, though.

The press are today reporting a further general drop in fuel prices, led by the supermarkets.

Costco diesel last Wednesday (12th June) £1.257 / litre

Monday this week (same forecourt) £1.217 / litre

£3.20 on a tankful (or about £20 compared to the motorway price for premium diesel)

I know the original post was comparing 95RON petrol and diesel, but I was shocked this morning by the price difference between 95RON and 99RON V-Power at my local Shell in Macclesfield.

95 was £1.279 (average for the area). V-Power was £1.489, i.e. 95p more per gallon. That really is extracting the urine. If your engine really does need 98/99RON fuel, Tesco Momentum is usually only 5p more per iitre.

One of the things that annoy me about V-Power is that Shell fuel stations don't seem to flag up the price until you put the hose into your tank and are about to fill up.

3 shell garages in a mile radius of me and all 3 show the price on the pump before lifting the nozzle.

Same with the 3 Shell stations near me, all pumps have LCD displays showing the prices of each fuel.

It's the local Esso stations that don't have the prices of premium fuels displayed.
