2012 slk has the rear led strip turn signal strip with an intermittent double speed. Can this be fixed or do I bite the bullet and get the whole light unit replaced as Mercedes recommend? well over £200...worse with the dreaded vat.

External LED lighting on cars is proving to be not particularly reliable . Once moisture or dampness gets on to the electronic circuit board, that usually means a failure. The led lights are a sealed unit , and although may be able to be repaired, opening them up often destroys them. £200 sounds cheap to me , a friend with a Saab was recently quoted £600 for a rear light cluster with led brake lights .

Those nauseating adverts for car sales on the radio i hear led's being heralded as somehow desirable.

And LED lights are often particularly unpleasant for oncoming vehicles. Motor bike ones are awful.

Thats the price of progress.

Fancy lamps at £200-600 per unit to replace when they fail vs conventional at £8-20 depending on manufacturer and powe

That's why I am not generallly an early adopter - it costs lots of money to make little functional progress. Why do people do it - feeds ego, one up on the neighbours, more expensive must be better etc.

Check that the front indicator is also flashing at double speed at the same time as the rear.

If it is it's probably a fault with the flasher unit , if not it may be a fault with the front flasher assembly or the connection to it.

Sorry to have to advise that flasher units went out with the Austin Allegro, along with choke cables!

No they didn't -

Up that to over £1000 if the front led indicator (presumably linked to the DRL) fails on a facelift XF Jaguar, complete headlight unit required, idiocy.

Some lorry rear clusters are knocking on £350 apiece these days (instead of £50 and 50p bulbs), and i dread to think what the pointless possibly small boy impressing fad for scrolling indicators is likely to set one back when they go on, or rather off, the blink.

One more thing i shall avoid for as long as possible.

Barney's £200 units are indeed quite a bargain price, Merc parts are often very reasonably priced but then they ruin things by making parts like bottom ball joints a permanent part of an air strut at some ridiculous 4 figure sum.

Those flasher units are for when you convert your Allegro (or other classics) to led bulbs . I’ve done this on a friends MGB.
