Rather impressed by The Telegraph for publishing this...hopefully Volvo will not let this happen again

This is what motoring journalism should be. Not fawning over the latest model and soft-touch plastics, but giving credit where it's due, and outing bad design/build when it's clearly evident.

It's not illegal, but it strikes me as extremely foolish to drive barefoot, precisely because of the possibility of losing power-assisted braking, as in this scenario. The offer of nearly fourteen grand plus another new car to compensate her anxious child (I wonder what it will be spent on...) seems stunningly generous. I got less than a tenth of this sum when an ancient driver with bottle-glass specs knocked me off my bicycle crushing my ankle beneath it as he continued to drive over it - it hurt for weeks - crush injuries can be worse than a cleanly broken bone. There's far too much 'mental illness' diagnosed these days - especially when ££££££ are available.

Same thought re barefoot driving if safety is so important..........slippery sweaty feet or a pebble stuck twixt foot and brake.

Presumably too she has no idea of the relative safety records of various cars. Albeit the previous model, the XC90 had zero fatalities in UK in many years.

Having said that I don't think Volvo's initial response was up to the mark if the face value report is to be believed.

Not a good advert for brake by wire.

You can't beat a hefty pedal, a heavy connecting rod and a servo. Very little to fail in that set up.

Goodness have we really reached brake solely by wire, not on any car i own it won't be, nor steering by wire either!

I had assumed by electronic failure, that all or part of the assistance had failed, which in a modern car i assumed would be an electric driven pump to assist instead of the old vacuum servo, but the brakes would still be mechanically connected, albeit with no assistance (especially if driven barefoot) it would take massively more foot pressure to make the brakes work at all.

MB W211 E class could suffer such electronic assistance failure via the SBC pump, from what i have read you lose about 90% of braking ability...when W211 was facelifted around 2006 that system was dropped.

I agree with you though, the good old servo and traditional master cylinder system wasn't broke, and did not need fixing.

Brake by wire ? This is entering 737 Max/driverless car territory.

A neighbour who works in railways told me there are fleets of new trains worth around £500million (yes £500m) which have been built but cant get the necessary safety certification because of software bugs, or signalling software incompatibilities so sit in sidings in west London.

Dont think manufacturers are thinking radically enough on backup safety.

Talking to a Yaris hybrid owner who was moaning about the amount of brake dust on the rear wheels.

Seems the braking has several stages:

1. Light braking engages re-generation.

2. Slightly heavier braking engages more re-generation

3. Heavier braking engages rear discs (front end already being retarded by re-generation).

4. Ok, balls out, lets use the front brakes and ABS if necessary!
