Epoxy on an engine plug? - Free-man

Wondering if any thoughts on this. Replacing a glow plug has become a nightmare as the threads got damaged (I actually think someone was at it before me). I can either buy a helicoil set and hope no bits go into the head when drilling, or try a strong epoxy around the plug and then put it in. Most brands claim to be able to withstand the heat but what about the pressure..........

Any ideas?

There’s a lot of compression pressure on a Diesel engine. At least twice that of a petrol. Can’t see any epoxy fixing this . Helicoil is the way to go .

I think you're right, it's too much of a gamble.

So if the glow plug is 1.0, the helicoil should have an inside diameter of 1.0 also, outside of 1.25 maybe? and obv the tap will be 1.25mm... it's going to be a tough job to get the angle right and catch all the falling shrapnel to protect the engine head.

Is there not an engineering shop near you who do this sort of thing regularly, if you can get the vehicle to them they don't charge silly amounts of money for such work, and they'll probably have a serious vacuum for removing any debris that finds it way inside.

Use plenty of grease on the drill and tap to catch the debris

My problem is I'm too much of a tight a*** to spend ! Going to order a kit of the internet and keep the costs down. I can do it if I have the right parts.

If you used epoxy, and it worked, I'm not sure how you'd ever get it out again, if you needed to.

I've used a blowtorch on epoxy but I doubt that'd be workable with a cylinder head.

Does the car start OK? I'd be tempted to leave it. Modern diesels have glow plugs, but i don't think they are a vital for starting as years ago.

If it starts OK [3 other gps are OK I presume) and there is no leak around the plug just ignore it. Doing that won't cause any more damage anyway..

S40 Man if only I had your wisdom before I went at this.

Too late I'm afraid.

So I'm going to order the helicoil kit!

An update

Helicoil was hell. The well is so deep it is so difficult to get the tools for the job. I had to install the helicoild 3 times in the end, as there were all sorts of issues. For example I was sold a tap bit for the helicoil with a pilot nose on it, which put threads in the lower chamber which I didn't want to do, but couldn't find the right tap for it. Did this, but then when screwing in the helicoil, only realised after hours of head scratching that it wound all the way down onto the next chamber where the pilot nose had tapped, so it was squeezing the space and not allowing the glow plug in. Getting the helicoil back out at such a depth is a job! Keeping the swarf out of the engine is a job! Breaking the clip off the helicoil and fishing it out is a job!

But very happy to say I have installed the new plug after cutting the helicoil to fit, and started the engine up, no fault showing and it seems to be running with less shaking.

On to the next problems now! Lots of smoke until I disconnect the MAF and the smoke immediately stops! So am confused as to whether this is a bad MAF or a bad turbo! The car goes into overboost/ limp mode after driving for about 10 minutes.
