OK, now that makes a lot of sense as now it does hesitate noticeably most of the time at about 5000rpm (Very approx) when accelerating, at the point I imagine the cam timing is swapping over. I didn't even know it had a knock sensor until now, I thought they were for more tuned cars.
Unfortunately the MOT is in June so with that EML it looks like that will be the end of the road - hasn't even ticked over 100k miles yet but the alternator whines, the air con sounds fragile (Although does blow cold) and now this instant MOT fail
