Recently discovered on a channel I'd never heard of - Blaze. Available on Freeview, Sky and Virgin, but I watched on the free app as you then have access to catch up.

The premise of the show is two mechanics trying to double their money by buying a banger, fix it up and selling on. The pair appear to know what they are doing although, like many shows of this format, it's easy to question whether the viewer gets to see the whole story. Also easy to question the mathematics of each project.

Series I covered a Porsche 924, Volvo 480, Mercedes 190E, MX5 and a Metro. Series 2 has just started with a MGB GT.

So not a Top Gear or Grand Tour type motoring show, but in my opinion, a show for those of us who enjoy a bit of spannering.

I think there was an episode in series one with an Alfa? It turned out to have too much rot and ended up being crushed!

There's an Alfa in the opening sequence but it didn't appear in the catch ups.

Just watched first part of MGB and programme appears to the usual set up job, as it has to be as the film crew can't hang around while the boys find a dozen MGs to go and look at. For the money they had it had to be a dog of a car.

They made a lot of not being able to look underneath, then as soon as it was on a ramp immediately found rot where you don't need a ramp to find it, the outer cills under the doors, where all MGs fail.

Lay on the floor and its in front of you, or simply grab the area with your fingers and see if it soft. Better to find it on first inspection and pay £500.

Continuity is also all over the place. It shows them taking a wheel off supposedly when the car arrives, but its a newly refurbished wheel done as part of the upgrade.

When I used to weld/restore cars I used to dread MGB's (and Staggs) as there was a trend to fit shiny oversills - looked lovely but the complex structure behind the scenes was usually cream crackered. A tip (not 100%) was to kneel down next to the rear wheel and pull where the wheelarch met the rear of the sill - If it moves/gives at all just walk away.

I once was doing this on a car and I could feel the whole thing starting to give way in my hands and a pile of rust dust forming on the ground - I ran away!

It's one reason I liked the Moggy Minor as it was easy(ish) to unbolt the "over sill trim" and visually check the sill structure underneath. It was a bit harder to check the rear spring hanger structure though (except one that had pushed through the boot floor!). The early ones were a welders dream as they had really thick metal - with later ones it was much thinner.

Just watched the latest episode, a BMW Z3.

After watching I checked out the MoT history. It failed in October on a couple of relatively minor things but what struck me was the number of times it has failed over the years and the number of advisories it's had. Clearly not a loved car and one I think most of us wouldn't touch with a bargepole.

I tend to find these programs much if a muchness and am surprised new ones keep appearing. If you check on the cars many are on SORN a year or two later.

The one I gave watched in recent weeks is "Bangers and Cash" about Mathewson's garage in Yorkshire. I visited them a few times over a decade and they came over as both honest and enthusiastic that cannot be said for many. Some interesting and unusual cars too.

I made the mistake of starting to watch 'Stripping cars for cash' or some such title. Overplayed 'diamond geezer' type characters reminded me of Harry Enfield's 'loadsamoney'. That was fiction too.
