Google says batteries last up to 5 years but sometimes only 2-3 years. I have never replaced the battery in my three (well-serviced Jap) cars (9 years, 9 years and 8 years) , have I been lucky or is Google full of doom and gloom ?

Replaced the battery (original) in our Suzuki last year at 8 years old the Chrysler I had (original) lasted 8 as well

Probably tempting fate, but the battery in my wife's 2010 Mazda 2 is the original. Still going strong. There, that's fate tempted.

Just replaced the Civic battery at 7 years old as the stop start warning went from the usual intermittent one you can clear and ignore to one that came on when I started the car and wouldn't clear. A long journey didnt resolve it so I took it as a sign that the battery was on its way out.

HJ always comments on the high costs of stop/start batteries. However mine was only £85 including overnight delivery for the original fit Honda spec Yuasa. There are two stop start battery systems in the industry and Honda uses the simpler, cheaper system. Even dealer fitted its only £115.

And as a bonus I didn't lose the radio settings, you just need to reset the clock. Don't you just love it when a job works out?

Mazda Xedos battery was 14 when the battery suddenly failed & would not take a charge - battery size no longer available so the Halfords supplied battery was narrower & taller + a pig to get it stable - needed small blocks of wood to get it stable.

CRV battery failed with the "Beast from the East" spell in 2018, it was 5.5 years - until then it had been great - Under £60 for a like for like mail order battery from Cox Spares (Honda Franchise) 10 mins to fit.

The "local Honda 14 miles away" was £110 diagnosing failed battery & fitting new one.

The only car battery of mine that's needed replacement was a Panasonic in my Subaru which was unreliable in it's 2nd winter and gave up at the start of the 3rd.

Several of the Delco/Freedom batteries fitted in my Vauxhalls were recycled as leisure batteries in my caravan and got into their teens although their capacity may have been reduced.

I think a lot depends on the usage pattern which affects the charge vs consumption.

The original battery in my Citroen C5 2.2 diesel lasted just short of 10 years. I suspect it might have gone on longer but changes to my work patterns meant the car spent periods sitting on the drive and then didn't get much use when I was back home, so I guess that wasn't too good for it.

We have three. I doubt if many are older than the one in my TR7 which my records show was installed in May 2002. But it hardly does any work as I twist off the positive lead each time I use the car. Don't need a spanner, works fine just finger tight. The one in our Focus was replaced in May 2006 (do most fail in springtime?!) and the one in the Audi is less than 4yrs old, but works hardest as the car's computer is full of 'alert' systems.

Remember - Google and the internet might be the work of geniuses but many internet posters are either stupid, or uneducated, or both - and we usually have no way of knowing their credentials. Sadly, it's full of stuff from often highly intelligent but uneducated so-called 'celebrities' e.g. scientology, anti-vaccine cults, fanny eggs, etc.

Surely it's all down to how the battery is being discharged and recharged and mileage covered rather than age?

It definately has the largest effects. Well used cars doing reasonable annual mileages made up of longer trips and during daylight hours will last far longer than those with the opposite usage patterns.

Mine in the Mazda3 (all OEM batteries) tended to last 4 years, but that was mainly because I had spells of unemployment and/or commuting solely by train and thus didn't use my car much during some years.

For mine at least, I found that in wamer weather (late spring round to early autumn), my car only needs a good run every 3 weeks; during the rest of spring and autumn and periods of relatively decent temperature in winter it can get away with a run every fortnight, and the remainder of the time once a week.

If I leave it for longer, especially in colder (and damper) periods, the battery runs flat very quickly and will, after not too long, won't take a charge. My car's on it's third battery and technically is due for another replacement within the next year, but unlike before (when I left mine longer between uses), it hasn't had any starting issues and has got through the service without any comments about it keeping a charge or not.

Unfortunately I live in a flat and cannot use a trickle charger. I suspect my extra usage probably isn't that much different over a 4 year period to the cost of replacing the battery. More favourable if I also include problems with the brakes and tyre flat spots (none for the latter yet, fortunately) caused by a lack of use.

My 54 plate V70 is still on the original battery, as is (I think) our 2000 MX5. If the Mazda has had a new one, it was before we bought the car in 2005....
To be fair though, I’m about to buy a new one for the Volvo as it’s starting to become sluggish...

Like you I have had batteries last for up to around 9 or so years, but on the other hand I have had batteries last as little as 2 years. It really is all a little bit hit and miss when you're looking up how long a battery will last, it's just too subjective to the car and the conditions of THAT battery.

I took a battery off an 05 or 06 plate Mondeo the other week that was still working fine, it was the original battery verified by the first charge date sticker. The car was being scrapped. The battery had outlasted the car.

It says just as much about the car as it does the battery!

Varta battery supplied by Nat. Tyres 9/3/05 for my 1994 BMW 325i still going strong.

It replaced the original battery (also Varta) the car had when first registered March 1994.

So the original battery only lasted 11 years :-(

They've obviously improved since if you're up to 14 years with its replacement :-)

Well most people here seem to have long-lasting batteries. I guess us lot are not a representative sample as many here are obviously 'into' cars and know a bit about maintenance. I won't bother replacing mine just yet.

How old is your battery ? - RT

IMO, batteries will last much longer than the oft-quoted 5 years, but occassionally it'll fail much earlier, at a year or two old - but that's only valid for well-cared cars.

All the abused cars, and therefore batteries, skew any statistics so it doesn't surprise me that the average battery lasts less than 5 years as 2/3 or more will have been abused.

Vauxhall Astra Mk3 purchased 2008 -Exide battery still going strong after 100 000 miles!

How old is your battery ? - RT

Both the '91-98 Astra-F and '08-04 Astra-G were fitted with fully sealed VRLA OE batteries made by AC Delco or one of it's subsequent trading names, eg Delco, Freedom, Vauxhall - so the Exide must be a replacement.

How old is your battery ? - bluezzr1100

well it lasted a lot longer than the OEM one!

Dunno, but it took a rather long time to charge after I bought it (from a local garage) so it was probably already quite old.

Won't be doing that again. High turnover specialist outlet next time
