I noticed on a recently redundant spammy-type post that the possible new term for your common-or-garden sat-nav or gps is "Dashboard Companion"

"Sat-nav is so last year darling" - etc

How terribly twee and PC - that made oi laugh!

Are stand alone sat navs still relevant in today's driving world? With the proliferation of smartphones all having gps and mapping included for free with automatic free updates is there any point to then any more.

I've used Google maps for years no and find its mapping and navigation better than the Tom Tom it replaced. The argument for not having signal isn't valid either as you An downloaded maps to the smart device so you can always getdirections.

I must be about the only human being on planet earth who hasn't got a smartphone - I don't need one, or want one, I've just got an ordinary PAYG phone for emergencies.

Got two satnavs, I old TomTom for the truck when we go looking for obscure addresses out in the sticks and a waterproof Garmin Zumo 200 for the motorbike.

Nah, there's two of us!

Neither of my parents or the mother in law have a smartphone, so that is another 3!

Add my wife who can't even cope with a basic mobile - I've got a smartphone but can only use it as a phone and a satnav, everything else is beyond me

No, they aren't now. Even if you just use it as a Sat Nav it's cheaper to get a phone than buy a stand alone unit.

And you get all the other stuff as well
Calculator, diary, calendar, internet, all my music, alarm clock,
Emails etc etc.
Or you buy a separate device for each of these functions instead.

Plus in a lot of modern cars the mapping and other apps are available on the in car display when the phone is connected so all you need is just one device.

I find i phones useful, but like most people I probably only use a fraction of its capability. The bluetooth is useful when in the car for hands free and for playing downloaded music. Got built in satnav but use Google maps if lost in a town somewhere while on foot. As for dashboard companion, that is laughable. I don't think it's PC it's just bonkers. Some marketing guru trying to excite the market with new terminology for an existing apparatus. Like saying 'automotive public transport vehicle' instead of bus! Crazy.

Dashboard companion .... means something different to every person who sees these words - for instance is it a satnav, or perhaps a camera (dashcam) etc? Was there a time when the trusted Filofax was called a companion of some form?

There are lots of good reasons why satnav is useful to have, and not just using a mobile telephone. Like some others, Mrs S does not have a smartphone, the DORO phone manages calls, texts and is also a camera .. it even has Bluetooth so could be used hands free for calling. Which brings me to the main reason not to use a smartphone as a satnav when driving - because it is illegal to hold a phone when in control of a car and unless there is a very good cradle system, or helpful passenger to hand that's 6 points and a fine on the way. Of course, there is one good reason too, because it will be more up to date than the satnav in many cars.

Get a cradle- £5£/10...then use the smartphone...don't think you would get away from a charge if you were holding the sat nav either.

I use a magnetic mount the phone stayes put over all types of road surfaces and use the voice assistant to control the phone whist driving so my hands don't have to touch it. It can do so much more than a stand alone sat nav. If I want to re route I just sat ok Google and tell it where I want to go no need to pull over or fiddle whist driving. Can also be used as a dash cam.

Soon, when crawling along a packed M-way,......'OK Google, do the driving while I have a nap - sound alarm when speed exceeds 40 mph..'

PS I have a very smart phone. it can store my favorite numbers, dial them with just one button-press and can also display the time accurately. It can even take photographs.

Today's smartphones can replace a whole load of other devices, I'm on holiday at the moment no need to take a camera the phone has a high end Camera on it. It can do translations find directions I can get a.taxi all through one device

"Dashboard companion" would soon be outdated anyway as more and more cars come with "nav" integrated into the car's infotainment screen. Nav is the new word !!

The first time I read the headline, I automatically thought of this little chap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3tVedKugrI
(He first appeared in 2001 in European car adverts for Audi's Multitronic transmission and had to be prodded manuallyby thedriver or passenger to dance, since the stepless transmission failed to provide the customary in-car vibrations of a conventional automatic!)
