Any - Forgot to send off my v5 after I bought used car - OceanMan

This is an extremely embarrassing and stupid thing to do of course, but I got a used car off a relative a few months ago, and I've just realized I didn't send off the v5 document at the time. I had it wrapped and ready to send but somehow it fell down the side of a cupboard and I've just found it (on the day I was supposed to send it I had about half a dozen other letters to send so I didn't notice it wasn't there).

Anyway, the obvious thing to do is just send it off on monday but would it be wise to also ring the DVLA and explain?

Thanks in advance for any help. This is my first car so im pretty clueless about such things.

it is actually the seller that sends off the V5!

Presumably you taxed the car somehow? As a new buyer you tax it using the number from the green new keeper's details' slip (V5C/2)

If you did tax the car OK - get a V62 from the Post Office which is the form if you have not received the V5C! :-

If you didn't tax the car, tax it now and date the original V5 form as from now!

Be careful here - it is easy to trigger an automatic prosecution

Thanks for the answer. I got the car from a relative and he gave me the form to send off, though he filled it in. The car Is taxed and insured. I just didn't send off the form.

If I send it off now with a date from several months ago will that cause problems? I'm not sure if I should speak to DVLA about it in advance.

I'd say don't contact them as this may trigger a prosecution - just fill in the V62 (this covers things like V5 being lost in the post! - ahem)

Ahh! I see. That's a big relief. Thanks for the info.

The car Is taxed

Under current rules when you acquire a vehicle the remaining tax is refunded to the previous owner and the new owner has to tax it before taking it onto a public road. Easy enough to do.

It seems to me that the OP is currently driving the car still registered to his relative thus driving on the relatives tax. This is possibly illegal.

Part of the V5C has a ref number with an additional digit that is used to tax a car when you acquire it and before it is registered to the new owner. I suggest that the OP taxes it immediately to avoid any penalties.

This is what we had to do when dad gave the wife his old Micra. We sent the paperork to the DVLA the same day.

I got the car taxed in my name when I bought it. The car wasn't taxed at the time as it had been off road for a while.

So presumably DVLA believes you to be the current owner, from that date ?

I don't know. I remember taxing the car, I think I used a number off the V5 to do so, but I didn't send the section of the V5 to transfer the car to my name. I hope sending a v62 will rectify this

Either its in your name or its not.

Could you have accidentally taxed it in your relative's name? If so, they'll get the tax refund when you move it into your name.

Just update the owner using the online service. www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle

And this could lead to the problem of you driving a car without tax, even though you have taxed it.
