Mazda 6 Tourer - 2014 Mazda 6 2.2 Diesel - Turbo Problems - jamsta0

Driving to work this morning up the Motorway and experienced a brief loss of power under acceleration. Pulled over after a few miles in a layby to check things out, couldn't find anything wrong.

On pulling out with heavy acceleration, started to hear a whining noise from the turbo, accompanied by very poor acceleration. This continued for a number of miles then acceleration started to improve but the turbo continues to whine accompanied by an almost metallic (metal on metal) noise from the turbo under load. No engine lights have come on but performance is definitely affected. This can't be replicated in neutral, only under acceleration load.

I have a 100 mile trip to complete later and concerned this might deteriorate further. Having read other forums, I understand there are know issues with turbos and injectors for this engine. Just wondering if there is any experience out there of similar issues?

Those sort of noises from a turbo suggest it is failing and continuing to drive could lead to bits of it ending up in the engine cylinders, which will not be good.

Call your recovery service and see what they advise.

The Mazda 2.2 diesel has a very poor reputation, so i think i'd expect the worst. There have been quite a few threads in the motoring section on it.

Thanks, all sounds ominous.

Having looked further, there is smell of burning oil. Oil also appears to overfilled so could this be the notorious Mazda 6 failed injector seals problem?!

Mazda 6 Tourer - 2014 Mazda 6 2.2 Diesel - Turbo Problems - Heidfirst

could be blocked oil suppy/return pipes to turbo.

Oil level overfill could be due to unburnt diesel from interrupted DPF regen being dumped into the sump (Mazda 2.2 is known for this)

Mazda 6 Tourer - 2014 Mazda 6 2.2 Diesel - Turbo Problems - dieselnut

" Oil also appears to overfilled "

The oil will have been diluted with diesel fuel due to the carp implementation of the DPF system that Mazda use.

The reduced lubricity of the oil will have done in the turbo & wont have done much for the rest of the engine also.

Have the car transported to a garage who has dealt with this engine before & will know what needs investigating.

By way of an update, this has been confirmed as a failed turbo. Also confirmed that oil is overfilled, presumably due to to failed DPF regen's. Cost of repair £2k-£2.5k depending on whether genuine Mazda parts are used!

Now considering whether to repair or replace with equivalent petrol car...skoda superb, VW Passat etc...any recommendations? Having not bought petrol in 15 years, surprised to see how many 1.4L engines are available on cars this size, presumably now with turbos?

All depends on budget. How much do you have to spend?

£15k-£25k. Ideally looking for an estate, 1-3 years old, between £15k and £25k and no more than 30k miles on the clock. Suitable for day to day commuting (2miles each way to the nearest rail station!) and weekly trips of around 200 miles (once or twice/week). Also regular long-distance holidays to Europe.

Mazda petrol engines are very reliable. Or perhaps you have lost faith in the marque.

I have just gone from a 2010 Octavia (MK 2) to a 2018 Superb (MK 3) and the difference in interior quality, refinement, road noise, gadgets and, well, pretty much everything is night and day and that is to say that the Superb is significantly better and I would definitely recommend it.

Bear in mind that the saloon shape is actually a hatchback so consider carefully if you really need the upright rear end of the estate. The boot in the hatchback is mahoosive!

I have the 1.4 TSI which at 148bhp is identical to your Mazda. According to listings on Autotrader, the 0-60 time is 0.5 seconds faster in the Superb but the toque is, of course, lower being a petrol. Personally, I find the performance more than adequate, even with 3 of us in the car, it has no problems making good progress when needed, in fact I would say it has a pretty good turn of speed really, especially as I drive mainly on congested motorways in rush hour. At the moment, almost all of my route is through roadworks with a 50mph average speed limit. Through there, I am getting about 52mpg. On more normal motorway driving at 70mph or so, I am getting about 47mpg, which I think is quite impressive for such a large car. Another point in favour of the petrol is how quiet the engine is; I test drove a diesel and found the clatter quite intrusive at low speeds. But since you're used to a diesel already, that may not bother you.

One note of caution if you are thinking of an automatic is that the DQ200 dry clutch DSG box used with the 1.4 engine does not have the best record for reliability, particularly around 2013/4 when they changed the oil from synthetic to mineral, I believe. Haven't seen many reports of cars from 2016on suffering with that, but the repair would be at least as much as your Mazda turbo if it does go pop.

I paid just under 17k for a year old 1.4 TSI DSG SE Hatchback with 14k on the clock, to give you an idea of price. There are some cheaper if you are willing to travel.

You could have a new Octavia 1.5 TSI estate within your budget, although there have been some problrems with the 1,5 engine and you might be better saving a bit of money and going for a newish 1.4 TSI (needs to be a manual as KBB has said above.) Several people on the forum have cars with this engine, and it does indeed give diesel-like economy.

An Octavia estate may well be roomy enough for you, but there's the Superb if you need the extra room. Other petrol estate possibilities would be the Toyota Avensis or Honda Accord or Civic. VW Passats were diesel-only until recently, and in any case a Skoda is cheaper and (in the Superb's case) roomier.

Annual mileage & how long do you intend to keep the car? There are still usage profiles where diesels are the best option. However, my own personal mantra is not to run a modern, emission-equipped common-rail turbodiesel out of warranty as there will come a point when expensive bits start to need replacing.

2 mile journeys to/from the station aren't going to give good mpg in any car from cold. ;)

For your budget you can buy a brand new Citroen C5x 1.2 petrol Sense Plus. There are some good discounts at the moment.

Extend the warranty for £575 to five years. You can make ten payments interest free to cover this. A Citroen service plan for the 130 bhp petrol engine is £19.20 a month.

This is what I have done. My car is built and has a chassis number. It is currently being shipped from China.

Hi, my mazda dealer told me my turbo needs replacing. Just wanted to ask whether your car had the same issues like idle engine revs up and down constantly, loss of power on low revs, engine and other lights on, and drives very rough?

Hi, just wondering how you went with your mazda?
I have had a turbo replaced previously and now that turbo apparently needs replacing as well. I’ve had loss of power going 110km/hr, loss of brake and no engine restart when I finally managed to pull over and stop the car. Also have had multiple engine and oil warning lights. The car was recalled in Australia and it had injectors, rocker arms and other stuff replaced.

I have just experienced loss of power at low revs and the engine inspection light coming on and also the SCBS inspection light coming on too. Have taken the car to my local mazda dealers to be told the small pin in the small turbo has snapped. They have quoted just over £1700 to supply and fit a new turbo. The issue I have is that a few weeks ago I had a power issue which turned out to be an oil pressure regulator issue. This was found by mazda Europe as the main dealer I was using could not find the fault. The turbo was removed from the ar, cleaned out amd then replaced back on the engine as one of the items they worked on before sending the information to mazda Europe. I have driven 800 mile since the pressure regulator was changed and now the small turbo pin has snapped. Do you think this is just bad luck or a coincidence seeing the turbo was removed, cleaned and then placed back on the car.

Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

Exactly what small pin do they claim has snapped? Most turbo designs don't have such things, is it a pin that stops a thrust bearing rotating?
