Volvo C70 - Groaning steering wheel - Alfred Rees-Glinos

Car makes a groaning sound when I turn the steering wheel. Any ideas?

Moved to Technical, but I think you need to be more specific as to where the groaning is coming from. From the steering wheel area itself, or further under-bonnet?

Mine (not Volvo C70) did that when I came back from the Yook this summer, after it sat in monsoonal Taiwan rain for 3 months.

I can't be more specific because I don't know exactly where the noise was coming from. Only seemed to happen when driving (ie not reproducible when stationary) but didnt seem to be coming from the CV joint area.

I sprayed all the steering linkages and steering column bearings with spray grease which seemed to quiet it down, though that could just be use.

Still does it occaisionally.

I don't know how similar c70 is to mk4 mondeo (Volvo under Ford ownership at the time of sale), however mondeo do this groaning sounds occasionally. I sorted mine by draining the power steering fluid. Check what color it is. If it's dirty black colour a change may help a lot. if b there is a filter check that too. Hydraulic fluid starvation could cause this issue.
