Does 3pts for sp50 (exceeding motorway limit) increase insurance premium more than sp30 (normal speeding)?

I got done just under a year ago (for sp50), and on the renewal process the premium jumped a lot, more so than a previous sp30 conviction which from what I remember didn't make much difference.

I was caught doing 71 in a variable 60 limit. On the picture plod sent my car was the only one in view, and it didn't seem particularly dangerous.

Do insurers assume sp50 means you are doing above 70 mph by a significant margin [80+ mph) in which case an accident could be both more likely and more serious and costly to fix?

Any thoughts please, but please try and refrain from rebuking me!

'SP50' is just police code for where the offense was recorded: it means you were exceeding the speed limit on a delimited dual carriageway or motorway.

The fact you got three points shows that the speed was not regarded as excessive relative to the limit. If you'd been speeding excessively (i.e. by 20mph more than the stated limit) you'd have got 6 points and a bigger fine. If I remember right, 30mph over the stated limit is an automatic ban.

I think the premium hike was simply because some insurers charge more than others for drivers that have points on their licence. It will depend on your age, how long you've been driving etc too.

Have a shop around for insurance quotes, you might get like-for-like cover cheaper elsewhere.

Insurance companies always increase premiums when you declare any motoring conviction. Based on the (rightly or wrongly) the principle that you are now a greater risk. In truth you should have informed them immediately the conviction was given to you. Withholding material information could easily invalidate your policy in the event of a claim. I declared my conviction, many years ago now, and my insurance immediately put a £70 charge on my policy payable immediately. You have to tell them.

I don’t think the difference between an SP30 and SP50 will make a difference. But as others have said, the insurer will likely want more money.
It’s not clear if the previous SP30 is still valid- the points last for 3 years but generally need declaring for 5. The combination of the two may make more of a difference. I don’t think my SP50 made much difference at renewal time- I shopped around and got a better price. My points expire in June but need declaring for another 2 years.

I got an sp50 on the 50mph section of the M4 by the bridge once. Premium went up ridiculously, think it was Aviva. Shopped around and went to LV who were far more reasonable and still with them today.

Thanks, that was the sort of similar experience I was seeking -sp50 in non 70 mph limit area

I too shopped around and got an OK deal so no harm done - well only the £100 fine, at least it wasn't doubled on the insurance.
