Is this now a fail?

On a similar subject, can you still have an MOT a month before and still use car even if it fails (unless its considered unroadworthy) or has that changed now?

Yes, it's a Major Fail. See link below for the appropriate section of the MOT manual.

Don't see how a vehicle with a Major Fail for a missing wheel nut could be considered anything other than unroadworthy by Plod or DVSA!

Seriously just get another wheel nut!

Seriously just get another wheel nut!

All that needs to be said here, why anyone would want to drive anywhere with a wheel nut missing is intriguing.

Is it or isn’t it a fail . That is the question. It’s only a fail if you can see the nuts/ bolts . If you present the car with wheel covers and there are nuts missing, then it is not a fail, as the tester is not allowed to remove any parts for inspection. This is the stupidity of the test.

From gov.uk site:

Driving a vehicle that’s failed:

You can take your vehicle away if:

  • your current MOT certificate is still valid
  • no ‘dangerous’ problems were listed in the MOT

Otherwise, you’ll need to get it repaired before you can drive.

If you can take your vehicle away, it must still meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times.
