A few suggestions I hope will help.
When the plugs were changed was there any oil on them? On the top, or the bottom? IF so then you need to investigate the possible source.
Have you checked if you are getting a good spark at one the spark plugs when you first try to start?
Assuming the battery is good and fully charged, then check the earth strap from the battery to the electrical ground. ANy sign of corrosion then replace it, or maybe a loose connection?
How old are the ignition leads? They do age and degrade and it is an easy job to replace them, if necessary. Same with the top of the distributor- check inside for damp, or cracks. Again replace if necessary.
Electrical fault with starter?- unlikely from your description as it seems OK after the first attempt.
Have your tried the Vauxhall owners club forums for help?
Good luck
