Strange decision to withdraw this lovely car?

Overpriced, disappointing sales and low margins as the car is built in Japan by Mazda but uses engines shipped from Italy. Styling appealed in initial pictures but on the road I actually prefer the much cheaper, more reliable and more honest MX5.

Apparently it was originally meant to have been an Alfa but they decided the styling just didn’t quite live up to the name so a Fiat badge was opted for instead.

According to Autocar the 'Arbroath' versions are still on sale which might please the Scots.

I don't mind the retro styling apart from the spectacle DRLs, and the colours are better than the MX5. Wrong in the Fiat engine though.

It's Arbarth, not Arbroath !!!

This decision may be down to difficulty in getting the 1.4 Multiair through the WLTP testing as that engine has been dropped by Alfa-Romeo and Jeep - the latter are using a newly developed 1.3 turbo so the speculation is that will find its way into the 124 Spider

Perhaps, and if not Mazda have just saved themselves a shed load of money on the MX-5's R&D and got a free run (again) at the small soft top market. I woner if they're going to put the new SCCI engine in it soon?

Abarth actually. I was being droll. I'll stop it.

Volkswagen do a version of the VW Up for Yorkshire.

It's the E-Up £25,640 is a lot of money for a Yorkshire man/woman to spend on a wee car.

What about the Jimny, particularly the 'C U' version?... ;-)

You are correct SLO.
The 124 was originally going to be an Alfa.
But the then boss of Alfa dictated that all future Alfa’s would be rear drive and built solely in Italy.
For me it is a shame I certainly have one on my shopping list to replace my aging GTV.
To me was the only interesting Fiat in the range since Abarth now produce all the sporty stuff.

My Father had Fiat dealerships in the 80s.
Shame there is nothing like the 127/131 mirafiori sport and Strada 130TC anymore which were all great cars built with poor quality steel.

Style and design is a personal preference, my wife has a 124 and in her opinion it’s a much better looking car than the MX5. For her the Fiat engine makes it a better everyday car than either of the Mazda options, I’m sure that on a race track the revvy Mazdas are great but they can be a bit of a pain everyday. The Fiat with such light weight and a wide torque band just seems to have really accessible performance. The rest of the car is pure Mazda so well built and reliable. Shame if it has died a premature death.

Shame really. The car was not a particularly rare sight on the roads so they must have sold a reasonable number in the UK. There are few enough cars like this available as it is so the loss of the FIAT probably halves that number, and while I am a Mazda fan and love the MX5, there does need to be alternatives.

The problem for all the other makes is that Mazda have THE product for that sector of the market - for any of them to top it would require a shed-load of money spent on R&D, whereas Mazda just need to improve each new version a bit, so spend less and can charge a reasonable price for the car.

An attractive car-even in white like I saw today. Sad to see its demise. It's as good lookingvas the original Spyder.

I don't dislike the 124 Spider, but to my eyes it's styling only really works from the front. From pretty much any other angle, all i can see the MX5.

If i was after an open 2 seat Fiat, i'd much rather heve a barchetta, which i thought was a fantastic looking thing. Very original and very distinctive. And going by what i read, being front wheel drive did not unduly hamper it in the handling department. But the fact that it was only available in LHD really scuppered it in this country.

Agreed, in my eyes it's a classy modernising of the original Spyder shape without being a copy
