Renault Clio / Captur - how to get the best new car deal / price? - BSGT
Dear All, How do you know if you’ve got a good deal if you’re a cash buyer on a new car? I’ve been looking at Clio 0.9 TCE 90bhp Iconic nad there are loads of pre-reg on the market from Lookers, RRG, Evans Halshaw & Arnold Clark. In Sept. lookers were selling at £11,999 + RFL and now jan 2 £12,490 (+400 more). Evans Halshaw £11,490 & Arnold Clark £11,500. This is an outgoing Clio with new model/FL arriving in summer 2019. RRG told me they are selling some at a loss & couldn’t negotiate yet 3 weeks on some of the cars have reduced by a further £110-£200. How do i judge if I’m getting value for money? Should I wait? Any ideas welcome

What an odd question. There must be a difference between being happy with a new-car deal and 'knowing you have got a good deal'. If you really want to KNOW yours is a good deal, you may waste time and blood pressure worrying about it. On the other hand, if you have had a pleasant experience with the sales staff, that may give you a happy feeling especially if you cease wondering whether there may have been a better one somewhere else.

When all is said and done, what matters is your Cost to Change, and perhaps any follow-up work that you may need. If you have done your homework and shopped around a good bit, it's up to you. This should be a good time of year to buy ? Those are screen prices, so as a cash buyer you should be able to haggle.

I don’t think it’s an odd question. Everyone has a different opinion on what constitutes a good deal & how they go about getting one. Anyway, I’m trying out carwow and this platform is a testament to how wide and varied the discounts for the same car brand, spec, trim etc can cost from a dealers around the country on new cars. The variance between dealers can be hundreds if not more. I think anyone would be peeved if a week or month later they could have saved £600 for example. I’m trying out different methods.

All you can do is shop around to compare prices. But once you’ve bought then stop! Last thing you want is to see a better deal once you’ve already bought.

Yes and don't discuss your purchase with the usual suspects we all unfortunately know, you know the ones, if they learn you've sold an item...you should have said i'd have gladly given you £X + 20% more, or they learn you've just bought an item...you should have gone the same place as me i got the better newer upgraded version 20% less plus an extra 5 year's warranty and a dirty weekend with some floozy thrown in.

The prices I mentioned are all current on autotrader. RRG are appear to be telesales people who take calls but don’t offer “360” sales, negotiation, after sales - they are not engaging so have given up. Evans Halshaw push conversations towards finance even tho I told them I was a cash buyer. I got that “cowboy” sales feeling. I get the feeling dealers are not interested in cash purchasers.

“I get the feeling dealers are not interested in cash purchasers.”

They’re not. They get commission on selling finance, particularly PCP’s which put a hold over the customer with a much greater chance of a repeat sale when your agreement comes to an end. A cash sale will still be pursued but with less enthusiasm and a lower likelihood of money off. Always let the dealer quote a fat finance deal, don’t interrupt him with ‘I can get it at a cheaper rate’ instead let him think there’s a fat commission involved then once he’s quoted a price (get it in writing) you can tell him it’s a done deal but you’ll source your own money. They can’t legally make you pay more because you chose not to take his finance.

The last time I bought from a dealership was exactly 10 years ago - I was buying an ex-rental with part-ex worth £1000, but the buying experience was amicable and there was no reluctance to take immediate payment in full. That was soon after the credit crunch - I wonder if things have changed a great deal ....
